  Q. Digital Exif info

Asked by Luke Luther    (K=14693) on 2/28/2004
I know that many of the images taken here are digital. I assume that many want honest feedback about their images. Why then do so few images have exposure information attached in the image summary?

hi Luke, assuming that your question relates equally to non digital capture, I see the attaching of such info of little use

what benefit do you derive from such info?

any exposure used to make an image is solely reliant on the light levels in the scene, so is of little use if trying to decide if the exposure is correct

the only use for such information would be to learn from example what result is obtained at different aperture or shutter settings ie DOF & the representation or freezing of subject movement

Luke - as to the why so few put it in with the images: laziness, or unaware of how to extract it. Surely many feel like Ray that there is little value in posting it. I personally appreciate exposure, film, camera and optics info as it helps me understand what I could do with similar equipment, what went wrong (if anything). The exposure parameters also tells me something about the light at the time.

Thanks Stefan. I think you understood better what it was that I was asking. I merely want to be able to extract information about the image so that I can hone my own skills. The more information I have, the easier it is for me to comprehend how and WHY an image was made.

I for one never understood why *I* have to extract that info. I upload the photo. Usefilm does something with it, maybe already creates the resized versions etc. So why can usefilm not read the exif info and fill in those fields? PHP/GD supports it so technically there's no problem there. Compared to scaling a photo the CPU usage to check and read exif shouldn't be the problem either.

Besides, personally I don't care about this info as they are only a few items on the list of variables which make the image. DOF and composition are more important imho and occasionally the speed as an artistic tool (read: freeze or not moving subjects).

Anyhow, I usually fill it in for those who want to know..

"Don't ask them how they did it,
ask yourself how you would do it."

First thing taught in most photo shools.

Don't completely see the point of your answer as related to my rant on computers dealing with exif instead of having me to do the gruntwork.
But with the remark as such I agree. Never been to photo school though..;)
