  Q. No images in critic's porfolios

Asked by Ray Heath    (K=4559) on 1/5/2004
I am at times disappointed to discover that members who give critiques and opinions do not have images in their own portfolios.

How can we judge the competence and veracity of a visual artist if that artist does not give us the courtesy of putting his own work up for scrutiny.

 Nigel Smith   (K=3834) - Comment Date 1/5/2004
Judge but the quality of their comments... Read/listen to what they say, think/analyse to see if you get anything out of it, keep the bits you understand, discard the rest.

P.S. I probably have no images loaded at this site... I can't remember actually.

Look at their web sites -- there's a good chance that if they are lucid in their photographic thinking, they shoot a lot. If they shoot a lot, they may want to keep their stuff on a site THEY can control, rather than on usefilm.

Just because someone is a good photographer doesn't make them a good critic.

Just because someone is a bad photographer doesn't make them a bad critic.

Just because someone doesn't have any pics on the site, they are not good or bad, maybe they just don't have a digital camera or scanner (like me).

This bothers me too. It seems that some critics hold photographers to standards that the critic himself hasn't even tried to achieve. When I recieve critism, I will usually view the commentors photos. Usually I'm disappointed to find that the photographer is guilty of the exact same critism.

A critique is just what it is - a critique. It should not require that the critiquer justify their thoughts and views; only that you as the photographer consider them carefully and either choose to incorporate them in your next adventure or to simply throw them away.

I have tried many times to try to encourage those on this site that are uncomfortable with critiquing (regardless of their skill level) to go ahead and "just try it". Not only is it good for the photographer, but it is good for the critiquer as well. To indicate that the critiquer must be at a certain level or without flaw is just not practical. On a site filled with many "Great image!" and "Fantastic!" comments - I personally am happy to have any type of critique done that is worth while whether or I agree with it or not.

That being said, I think the points that Nigel and Richard made should be taken to heart. And remember, photography is about what you love... shoot for yourself and learn from others when you can.

Very well stated Michaelle...

I regard Usefilm as an opportunity to learn how to critique, and I'm prepared to believe that others are doing the same. I had hardly ever done any critiquing before I joined, and was very hesitant at first. But hey, I'm doing enough of it to be learning fairly fast. Mostly I only bother if I already like the photo, and concentrate on saying what it is I like about it. If I CAN think of anything that might have made it better, I suggest that. Anyone who visits my photos will soon see where I'm coming from, and that I am certainly not criticising from a position of superiority!
