The one that sticks in my mind is Matthew Brady, who was responsible for documenting the American Civil War - the first war to be photographed to any degree. Early in the war, he closed his portrait studios and sent equipment and photographers into the field. It should be noted that he took few of the photos himself. The best known of his photographers were Timothy O'Sullivan and Alexander Gardner. Brady published the photos under his name only, which (as you might expect) generated quite a bit of animosity.
