Robert Johnson brought up Danny Lyon...
I lost track of Lyon's work when I left the USA for a few years. Last I heard he was working with Robert Frank on films. That was decades ago. Anyone have any recent information as to his whereabouts, what he is doing?
Danny Lyon's earlier work impressed me largely because it evinced a certain time when American culture was on the verge of profound polarization, when the spirit of the Beats was about to be clouded by the media invention of the Hippie, and (in my mind) there was a certain dispossession of the regular working class. Okay, that's what I say in retrospect. That's intellect smoothing over the viceral angst of the period. In fact, Lyon did The Bike Rider images while I was in my teen years, and I wasn't seeing photographically. Danny's work brought it right up front, right to my face that while I was there in the reality I did not _see_ what he framed in his photographs. I wonder what I'm not seeing today.
BTW, Danny's picture, "The Bikeriders, Wisconsin ..." appeared on a T-shirt advertising Alice's Restaurant, Woodside California about seven years ago. I wonder how he feels about that.
