  Q. addition to initial question, `what role does humour play in photography?`

Asked by c. shilliday    (K=0) on 3/16/2001
Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful responses. I wonder now whether this particular topic warrants the study which it clearly currently lacks? Our organization, The Floating Gallery Centre for Photography in Winnipeg has just completed a thematic exhibition year devoted to this issue. We are now trying to develop a traveling version of the exhibits to take to The Netherlands next May. An accompanying catalogue will undoubtedly be produced. Thoughts?

I think that much of the humor in photography comes from the way that many photographers have, what I call a "left handed" way of looking at things. It is how photographers can select and edit a scene to make the viewer look at a situation in a perticular way. This is very basic to the essence of the power of photogrpahy. Lookn at the photographs of such "serious" photographers as Garry Winogrand and the way that he used irony to make some very thought provoking and humorious photograhs. It may be very interesting that humor in photography is very much related to vision and for that reason it would make for an interesting study and is worthy of investigation.
