tendencies of contemporary photography

CALL FOR PAPERS

An international conference on PORNOGRAPHY and/or ART: tendencies of contemporary photography will be held at the Ecole d'arts appliquis, Vevey, Switzerland, September 29-30, 2000.

The aim of this conference is to review the history and the current state of that segment of the contemporary photographic production which is accused to be pornographic, to examine critically the practice and the theories of the relationship between photography and pornography in the broadest sense, and to provide an international forum for an exchange of ideas on these subjects. The conference is intended for professors, researchers, students, as well for artists, art directors, journalists or other professionals with an interest in the aesthetic, ethical and legal problems raised by pornography.

CONFERENCE LANGUAGES: English and French

I imagine this is old news to some. I heard it on N.P.R. the other eve and then remembered this posting. Seems there's a woman in Ohio under indictment for taking pictures of her daughter bathing herself. The woman is an amatuer photographer who has been working on a documentation of her daughters life and sent the film out to be processed. Apparently the processor then notified the local prosecutor and so on and so on.

This woman is not the first amatuer to get in trouble for this in the U.S. in recent years.

Of course this may well be old news to the forum and we're all familiar with Jock Sturges and Sally Manns work/problems.

Government intrusion into our private lives is the beginning of the end of democracy.

On the issue of government intrusion--if only we could come up with a 3rd party that seeks to minimize or end government intrusion (especially with regard to our bedrooms, schoolrooms, and doctors' offices, not to mention employment offices), while at the same time keeping their greedy, "needy" (!) hands out of our pockets. A few years back, the conservative, religious, Right Wingers in Cincinnati chose to raise an international and embarrassing stink over the "Gay" Robt. Maplethorp exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum. By doing so, they achieved the exact opposite of their goal, and soon much of the world was curious about this man's photographs.--As for our current Democratic administration, where are these "Big Govt. is Better Govt." weanies now that OPEC is raping us over the price of fuel? We spent BILLIONS, and sacrificed American (and Coalition) LIVES to protect the OPEC nations from Saddam's psychotic aggression, and this is how we are treated? In my mind, such issues are far more "obscene" than nude photographs. Meanwhile, our current President "Bubba" seems to have (had?) a penchant for homely, chubby bimbos with big noses, big boobs, and even bigger mouthes. The current leader of the "Free World" enjoyed extra-marital B-J's (and reciprocated with cigar dildo's..?) in the tax-payer supported WHITEHOUSE...In addition, he (The President) was not above masturbatory phone sex...). If a Whitehouse photographer could have photographed some of these Presidential "actions", the resulting photos would probably be most popular at truckstops and all-night porn shops. At least JFK had more taste, discretion, and class...

 David Hodgson   (K=143) - Comment Date 3/10/2000
I do not understand the need to attack the Whitehorse on the subject of a conference on pornography. I do agree with a need to keep are private lives private but that does not extend to the public world. But above all I would like people to stay on thread if I wanted to here a tirade against the Whitehorse I would not come to a photo form its a privacy issue. Please stay on thread

 David Hodgson   (K=143) - Comment Date 3/10/2000
Of course meant to write White House not Whitehorse my spellchecker got the better of me

 Tom Meyer   (K=3514) - Comment Date 3/11/2000
I kinda liked "Whitehorse" better: I do not understand the need to attack the Whitehorse on the subject of a conference on pornography... see what I mean? (There's a strip club here in Atlanta that's called "The Pink Pony)... t

Kind of off-topic but in response to one post here and considering that it does affect the way we view government intervention in our private (and artistic) lives:

"Government intrusion into our private lives is the beginning of the end of democracy"

Where do people get the idea that we are a Democracy. The Constitution and several other documents, not to mention the Pledge of Allegiance that used to be drilled into every schoolchild, clearly states that we are a Republic. In fact, as far as I can tell, there has never been a true Democracy since ancient Greek society.

 grant groberg   (K=802) - Comment Date 5/11/2000
And we mustn't forget that the "true" democracy of ancient Greece was based on the economics of slavery.
