  Q. photographing children at play

Asked by greg mason    (K=0) on 11/15/2001
That was a wonderful post by James Chinn. one of the best ways I have found to put a smile on someones face and to get myself out of a rut is to photograph children at play, especially at sporting events. Whether it is your own children, grandchildren, neices, nephews, or just family friends, a few times a year I show up shoot three or four rolls of film, and have duplicate 5x7's printed up. I show up the next week and tell everyone to take the pictures of their children. Very few teams have a parent with the equipment, or skill to shoot a childrens sporting event. Most parents simply have point and shoot cameras, or at most an inexpensive SLR with a 28-80 zoom lens. I am not a professional but like most of you I have enough equipment to make a decent attempt. the photographs do not have to be perfect, and most will not be. The look of gratitude that I got recently from parents by giving them even a poorly composed picture of their child having fun playing soccer is well worth the small expense in film and developing. by givng them duplicates they were able give one to relatives, take to work, or give to the seperated spouse.

Thanks Greg.

I also enjoy doing informal shooting with kids. Our neighborhood is literally overrun by kids between between 5 and 10 yrs old and on weekends they roam the neighborhood from one parents house to another looking for friends, fun and usually snacks. When the gang catches up to my house and my daughter joins in I sometimes follow the action with my 35. Sometimes I will set up my 4x5 and get them to pose in groups in our backyard. Like you I make up 5x7s and send them home with the kids on a later date. I always seem to get a couple real gems on those days.

My most recent adventure with my daughter and friends was to give them 3 el cheapo point and shoot cameras, alter the DX codes on the film canisters to get a better exposure on film and turn them loose. My duaghter and I process the rolls and print contact sheets for the kids who took pictures. They select a few prints and Natalie (my daughter) and I print them up. It is real interesting to see how different kids see the world with a camera. Maybe if I get real brave, next summer I will let some of the kids print their own images with Natalie and me.

I like photographing children. I am working on an exhibition about children, and as a parallel event to my exhibition I am organizing another exhibition with pictures taken by kids! As James says some of the pictures taken by kids are very interesting. I have no children yet but I give to neighbors? kids point and shot cameras loaded with B&W films and I let them free to shoot everything.
