Oh, I really don't know, Chris. It's hard to decide. The colour shows the reflections and textuers better. However, the B&W. is so crisp and emphasizes the girl more. So, I'm not going to make a decision here, I'll just ernjoy both.

excellent image...and definitely i prefer the original color shot, in BW we can't appreciate enough the beautiful reflections on the water.

Hi Chris, first nice to see people or portrait pictures. In this case (portrait+landscape) I prefer the color version, this picture and the reflections needs the different colors. Very nice!

Works either way depending on what you are trying to accompish. If journalistic, then B&W if People shot color is nice. the shallow DOF sets it up for success either way as I see it

Well there goes one good theory. It looks as if MY software automatically saves at 200dpi. And there I was absolving you... Now, I'm afraid, you will have to take full responsibility. If you can't see the edge effects I'll just shut up. As I said with reference to your "young lady and swan" picture, they rather mar the picture for me, but if you like them, then that's fine too. You can surely see what I mean, though, can't you? The line of white that comes immediately next to a line of black, and vice versa? This is not something that screen resolution affects, except at the very grossest level.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Roger, but it's only served to make the issue more mysterious! I still don't see what you're seeing and I always convert my images to 72dpi in ImageReady before I upload them to the net. (I never ever save anything at 200dpi!!)
I've just checked the image in question and it was, indeed, saved at 72 dpi. I'm just wondering what resolution your monitor is and whether you're looking at it through a microscope! ;o)

Sorry if I mystified you, Chris. The most obvious artifacts are the white-after-black and black-after-white edge effects. These are a dead giveaway for over sharpening. I have ringed them in white in the 500-pixel image attached. There is also some of that characteristic speckled look in the stonework along the bottom of the picture. But I think I may know the reason for this over-sharpening, and it's almost certainly not your error. The image when I downloaded it had a resolution of something like 200dpi. When Al's software sees anything above 72dpi, it automatically applies further JPEG compression, and then sharpens the resulting image to compensate (which may also suffer from JPEG artifacts). This is crazy, I know, because what does a nominal dpi mean on screen? but Al cut me off in the middle of explanations of this with "issue closed." So Usefilm is stuck with this. The only thing to do is to make sure you convert to 72dpi before you upload!

I have to admit that this comment rather puzzled me, Roger. I searched and searched for the artefacts you mentioned but couldn't find one! On my monitor this picture is sharp, clear and totally free from aberrations of any kind ~ as is the B&W version. It certainly wasn't over-sharpened and the process of saving I went through was identical to all my other shots. So I remain a little perplexed!

My choice would be the color one. The colors in the reflection her skin are so well defined in the color. Its beautiful. However, I would also add that had I not seen the color one, the B&W in itself is a nice photo. Just the extra feel from the color shot here makes it better.

Although I like the b/w toned images as the give more drama to the photo yet in this case I go for the colored version, it gives the photo life.

I think the color version is best for me. Like you the eye tends to go to the girl in color but just wanders in the black and white. I bet she is taking hers in color. Don.

I think the girl integrates with the picture as a whole better in the B&W. Also I think the out-of-focus areas work better in the B&W... a bit distracting in colour. I must say I find the over sharpening artifacts too obvious in both of them, but perhaps less so in the B&W. So I'll plump for the, er, less saturated image.

I think the Color Photo works better Chris, To me the reflections in the color version has more eye appeal to it. As Fabio said the color version has an almost 3-D effect to it.
Now, in retrospect I think the B&W would make more of an interesting Photo to Print and hang up on the wall. I think that is because I am so fond of B&W portraits.
Either way, You have a winner here my Friend.

Colour for me every time, Chris. Unless you have a rare, spectacular photo, that is actually enhanced by monochrome. For me, the BW is dead. The colour brings some life and interest.

I'll sit on the fence, Chris, and say I like both shots! I guess it really depends on what you want to say with the shot, and this one could go either way.

In this case Dear Chris I think Colour works better.
Her Skin is in grat contrast with the greenish background giving a 3D effect I don't find in the B&W version.
