Super shot!
I really like the wide, wide angledness, the sharpness of the rocks and all that lovely colour - no washed out skies here!

Hi Huw. The metering is very reliable, but you need to "think a bit for it to help it along if you want to get that little bit extra. Understanding how exposure is calculated helps a lot. Currently, I use partial metering and manual exposure, and if pointing at a darker object, I adjust so that the meter to underread by an appropriate amout (relative to the darkness compared to the overall brightness of the view). I use RAW (to finetune afterward), and I often do a bit of bracketing (you can get some stunning effects sometimes by shooting low key or high key). After I take the shot, I check the histogram and ensure exposure is correct as far as I perceived it (a good learning experience). With negtive film, you can shoot with whatever exposure you want, and they will fix it at the shop - a very different and forgiving experience. Slide film is a lot more like digital - except its less forgiving.

I wish you luck in getting the 5D if you choose to go that way - it looks like a great camera, and your 17-40mm should be awesome with it. For me, my 20D is really cool, and I will rather invest in better glass, and more of it (the 10-22mm lens really rocks for wide angle shots). Eventually when Canon does a few steps of real significant progress (eg does something about auto dust removal, adds 2 stops of dynamic range, makes a sensor that has much less noise, comparable cost full frame sensor (depending on what my lenses will work with at the time), etc), I will upgrade the body. For now I am more concentrating on improving my technique and produce better compositions - I believe it will take quite some time for me to outgrow the 20D...

the clouds make something grand out of this moment. A sense of Stonehenge.

Thanks Bryan - do you find the exposure metering with the 20D reasonably reliable with the polariser or do you need compensation? It's the one thing I am struggling with - it seemed to be much easier to use the pol. filter with film.

Cheers
Huw

Thanks, Huw. I used a HOYA 77mm Super S-HMC Circular Polarizer Filter. Works very well and cuts flare a lot compared to my other ones for my other lenses.

Bryan - you really seem to be a one man advert for the 10-22.
Excellent shot! Did you use a filter? If so, which?

I can't wait to see how my 17-40 will work with a full fram sensor if I take the plunge and spring for a 5D

Thanks, Jose. Yes, you are right - 10mm x 1.6 camera sensor crop factor = 16mm.

Hi Bryan,

amazing shot, the front/background perspective together with the clouds create an incredible depth. The shapes form a nice composition.

On film it'd be the equivalent to a 16mm, right?

Congratulations!

Regards from Brazil,

Jose Azevedo
