About I submit this shot for one reason. I an convinced that once I was busted and this big guy knew I was there, He started posing ! This is a non typical pose for an Elk. I have thousands of shots and nothing like this. He is stretched out to the max ! Just thought you might get a kick out of this " Animal Behavior "
He later ended up on a book cover, so maybe it was his official tryout !

A kick Jim? He's just applied a rocket launcher. What a graceful animal posing like that. The combination of him and you with your skills, little wonder he ended up on a book cover.
MAGNIFICENT image.

Jim,

This is a real beauty. Look at that rack. It would have been really nice if you could have gotten the rack against a smoother background. Those trees really confuse the view of those antlers.

By the way, I'll be in Yellowstone for a week starting 9/1, any tips.

You ae right, this is why I never had posted it before. It was shot with my old D100 and it was set on Auto WB. I should have had it on cloudy, except the sun was in and out in and out. I tried warming a bit with saturation but not much help. I should have shot raw, then in CS2 I could have adjusted wb after the fact.
The book, Elk 201, wasn''t mine but I did do the cover, and an earlier shot was the coever shot, with Sun and proper WB !!

Hi Jim,

WOW....what a FANTASTIC photograph of this magnificent Elk!....He is HANDSOME indeed. How lucky can you get?

I hope the book cover he ended up on was YOURS??
:)

He looks perfect! Maybe there was a female behind you in the distance!

REally an excellent photograph! You get a pat on the back,

Lori :)

ps...just had a thought, what do you think about a slight warming filter? (do you use PS?) To me, the branches look a bit bluish...or is it my monitor?

That's too funny, Jim! Does he have an agent? ;)

I like how the dead tree behind him has similar structure to his rack, and leads right into it.

Hi Jim
Great shot.
I once saw one of these guys charge a motorhome.
It was really funny. The driver had stopped right beside a sign that warned people to keep away during the rut.
Apparently neither the driver nor the bull could read.
There was a lot of damage, wish I had my camera back then.
