Woo! I'm on a steep learning-curve in PS Margaret. That you recovered the head detail from a .jpg whilst preserving the contrasty "punch" I'm far too fond of is something I shall learn from. Thank you very much :)
As for the D70, yes, it's a cool cam for sure - handles just like my film SLR. I'm struggling a bit with all the options and am way too tempted to use the Auto setting when in a hurry! I just wish a firmware update would emulate the old analogue plus and minus exposure mask in the viewfinder!

Anthony had a play in PS with this to see if I could even out the tones - I really like this, how are you getting on with the D 70 ? Margaret

Well, yes and no. The D70 COULD have preserved that detail, if you had intentionally underexposed by about 1 stop. On high contrast shots, I typically drop down to -2 EV.
Still nice textures, though. I can see what caught your eye.

I dont think the head or right arm are washed out that much, it doesnt take away from the picture itself, it adds something to it.
