About The estuary at Papatowi.

Remnant podocarp forest that once covered New Zealand, before human habitation, adds contrast to the textures in sand & water.

A great place to be as the sun goes down, but wrap up well. It was b#@%&y cold.

Thanks for your comments Tim. Welcome back.

The APS size sensor on the D70 gives an effective focal length of 18 mm on the wide end of the 12-24. 1.5X. Slight CA in bright backlight and minor distortion. Both easily corrected in Photoshop. I also use PTlens. An excellent free plug-in.

Unfortunately the tides come in fast on this stretch of the coast and the sand patterns were gone in a few minutes. Regards John

Classic composition as we have all come to expect from you, John! And the textures of the sand look like they could occupy me through a couple 1gig memory cards... The 12-24 is effectively a 24-35, is that right? I loved shooting with a 24mm in my schooldays, but haven't been able to budget yet for the digi-version. The perspective remains as seductive to me as ever.
~Thanks for your comment on my Estrella. It is that rice paper quality which made me try a post, and burning in particular helped subdue the background. I'm glad you looked. As for keeping up on my work, I am only just back online w/usefilm after a long hiatus. I have regenerated and started in some new directions (for me). I'd like to hear what you think of my recent infrareds, The Wait and I Saw Her Again. That avenue is keeping me interested. I hope you and yours are well, and... I still plan to get to Otago before Old Scratch gets me!

Intriguing the crossing diagonals here, the water and the ripples create suspense and the eyes have nice leading lines. I share your love of super wide, the wide FOV feels great here. Nice natural colors. Great shot, congrats

I love the images you are getting with the 12-24mm zoom. That would be my chozen range of FLs. With maybe a 60mm macro on the long side and a 10.5mm fisheye on the wide-angle side. The textures of water and sand are captured very convincingly.

Thanks for your comment Richard.

When I switched from film to digital capture I missed the view through my Nikkor 20mm lens. The 12 - 24 has given it back, and slightly more. With the judiscious use of free plug ins like PTlens, minor distortions are easy to correct.

With very brightly back lit scenes some CA is noticable. Again correctable with software.

This is the lens I use most of the time now.

Regards John

Not my stereotyupical idea of New Zealand at all, but quite powerful and beautiful. The composition and detail in the image are wonderful. It is also a good example of the lens I'm considering buying soon. I suppose you like it?

Nicely composed, I like the way the lines in the sand lead the eye into the shot.
