You can add sharpness now selectively to parts of your image by painting with white on your mask (not on the background layer photo, on the mask ! Be sure the mask is activated by clicking there before painting, thus unmasking).
I would recommend a soft brush, with hardness 0%, set the opacity and flow to 30- 50% and use the brush tool. You will see the effect coming through where you painted. No problem if overdone a bit, you can go back with the history function or remask certain regions with black again. And you can finetune your effect at last with the opacity slider, see the regional effect losing strength when you reduce the opacity of the background layer.
Thats all. A powerful tool not only for regional sharpen, it is extremely versatile for all kind of selective work-up.

Then, perform your sharpening to the image as you lie it (unsharp mask, or any action or plugin). Pay attention only to the region you want to change selectively, the clouds. Other parts that should not be altered at all will be masked later
Now mask the background layer copy: Alt-click onto the Add Mask icon (photo), voilá - your image on top is masked and the background image is shown again.

first, open the layers palette in PS (if not opened): Window > Layers (or F7)
then, click-draw the image thumbnail onto the new layer icon (photo)

Coming late to the show I can only agree and say that I would leave the tones untouched, it is a wonderful atmosphere. But... if I would upload this, I would try out a selective sharpening only to the clouds, just to make them a bit more 3D. This is to be performed with PS and masking, I dont know if you are familiar with that, let me know.

Hi and thanks for your comment on my pic. It seems we're drawn to the same types of photo opportunities (clouds, sky, trees, landscape...). I really like this one and don't feel anything missing from it, actually. Take just the clouds even...so much movement and contrast there, and that against the stark black of the tree...looks almost sumi-e to me. Lovely.

Nothing needs to be changed in my opinion. Ansel Adams often said that understanding the local weather, and light was as important as understanding the technical aspects of photography. I think this image shows that you have a good grasp of those elements. Most photographers prefer CRT monitors to the LCDs found on laptops. Perhaps that is the problem????

Well, Mary, after your kind and encouring comments on my Modern Tokyo series, I thought I'd see what I could do here. The first thing I thought to try was conversion to B&W because it's so nearly monotone already. I played with a whole LOT of things, black level, contrast, colour filter, and this is the best I could do.

really beautiful with magnificent tones.
No cold tones on my monitor, and no oomph needed IMHO, but make care you have the monitor properly calibrated (ie with Adobe gamma setting in PS) otherwise it's very difficult to get a real feel about an image.

Hi Shane. Thanks for your comment. I wasn't specifically looking to play with this. I just thought maybe it lacked something even though I like it as is. It seems the concensus is that the tone and mood are fine. That's good to know. I do agree with you about leaving well enough alone. Although, I must say, I have started to play with a few options in PS to see the effects. However, I haven't been messing with my landscapes or sunsets. Mother Nature gets an A+++ from me for her everchanging use of colour and design in the sky.

Nothing "cold" about this magnificent photo, dear Mary. Its beauty is no less than that of your "Light through the darkness"

Some further information: Etzel was the acronym of "National Military Organization" and not as stated. Its commander, Begin, was looked for by the British but never caught. Very much later he became our first non-left-wing Prime Minister and was the first to reach a peace agreement with an Arab country, Egypt. The commander of "Lehi", Yair Stern was discovered by the British in his hiding place and shot dead.
Quite a few members of "Etzel" and "Lehi" were executed by the British. These executions diminished considerably after "Etzel" kidnapped two British sergeants and hanged them. When the state of Israel was established, one of its first acts was to abolish capital punishment and except Eichmann, who was accused of crimes against humanity, nobody was executed here.

Mary... I think this is gorgeous as it is... I love the lines captured running across the lake & that mist stands out really well.
If you wanted to warm the picture up you could try adding a little red to the mix.. I tried it out using Ulead PhotoImpact... I have taken a little blue out & clicked once up on the red & green... gives the photo a more warmly feel... see what you think  )

It seems beatiful and almost perfect as it is.
It's a little noisy in the solid grey parts, but nothing overly intrusive.
The picture is almost monochromatic, Mary. The tonal differences are what make it so beautiful. Something you may want to try is a b&w conversion. I'd recomment using the channel mixer in PS for this.

I'd say this is a great shot as is. You've got a great perspective, and the use of the tree was also excellent. If playing is what you desire, try first with maybe the contrast, or maybe even going B&W. But I stick with my first line. Sometime the best thing to do is nothing.

I like this as is and wouldn't change it. If you want a different picture what about a photo filter (PS CS)? I like to have side by side copies so I can see the changes. I like the trees to the side they're just the right touch.
