About Contrary to popular belief, there are many different kinds of veils, also, there is no one Arabic word for "veil" and even the English dictionary lists four distinct definitions of the word veil, in terms of material, space, communication, and religion.

In regard to Islamic culture, the veil is best viewed as a part of dress in the manner that, like other elements of dress, it is specific to time and space. In different areas of the Islamic world, styles of veiling and reasons for it are distinct.

Veils do not take away identity, but rather can be markers of identity. They are not only symbolic of faith, but are also a form of visual expression.

The veil can reveal many things about its wearer as an individual including:
-where they are from
-tribal association
-status/rank
-the event they are attending such as a wedding or funeral
-marital status
-a woman's skill as a textile maker

This photo is a repost of a similar photo that I uploaded before but was in B/W "http://www.usefilm.com/image/635872.html".. it was captured in Khartoum - Sudan when I was on a medical convoy last year...

Camera Settings: 1/80 sec - f/5.3 - ISO 200 - FL 80mm.

Very interesting and informative description in addition to the intriguing portrait. I like the colors -- they make her human as opposed to a picture. Because a veil also hides more, does it make the subject more of a curiousity to find out more?

Very dramatic portrait! I appreciate your very detailed history regarding the veil. Very interesting indeed, that something as simple as the veil is actually very complex in terms of the varied meanings..A study in itself..I like the lighting, fully illuminating her face, and the way you filled the frame, focusing all of the attention on your subject. I think it's wonderful when we can use art and photography to teach...as you've done here. 'The eyes are the windows of the soul,' as they say, and you've captured a very intense look in this woman's eyes..making the viewer look beyond the veil and to the person underneath...Very well captured and presented...hugs..:)Linda

Excellent capture Khaled, You really manage to get the best out of your traveling :) I think its missing some sharpness on the face as the focus was on the veil, other wise, it is good enough to be on National Geography :) very well done,

Khaled, this is such a good portrait. Even though only the eyes are visible, we see her soul. Its true the veil can actualy increase the mystery and beauty of a woman, for this is the essence of feminity...

thank you for explanation of the different meanings of the veil in the islamic world.

I'm really impressed by your excellent portrait of the sudanese woman. the veil may cover a large part of the face, but it reveals eyes of an unbelievable intensive expression.

Wonderful abut Khaled, I love learning new things about different cultures. Understanding customs, laws etc. of different countries gives us an insight as to what makes them unique and to me this is the only way for all of us to really get along and appreciate eachothers differences.
This portrait is wonderful and even with the veil we can see a glimps of her character. Alison

Excellent portarait Khaled, You are a master of capturing the perfect expression. However, I am still puzzled how do you convince these people to pose for you with such serene faces :).
The few lines that you add in your comment are well researched and highly informative. I do appreciate it a lot.

Best regards my friend, Hesham

Khaled,

Not only is it a great picture, but your comments are incredibly informative as well! I never knew those things.

I'm very curious about various cultures around the world and have been studying Mexico and Brazil for the last year or so (since i've been to those countries and am very intrigued.) I'm also very intrigued by the Islamic world and I think that will be the next that I study -- That and Russia. both have incredible histories and culture. I can't wait to visit the Middle East at some point -- preferrably if/when American's aren't in such danger. It's too bad that for various reasons, the majority of the American People who do respect other cultures have to pay the price for the few who make us look so bad.
