Hi Irenka When selecting the options for the photo's information, it automatically states >5 minutes for a particularly long exposure. This shot was exposed for around 15 minutes and it is quite surprising how much the earth rotates over that amount of time. But there is no photoshop effects to lengthen the star trails. There was a bit of cloning required to remove some of the noise (dots) that became apparent after 15 minutes which I understand is pretty typical for digital cameras, particularly the 300D. Cheers

Fantastic twist! But I have doubts - did the stars really turn so much in 5 min, or is it some PS applied here?

Excellent! I love the building in the foreground, it puts everything in perspective. I've done star trails on film, but I'm very glad to see that you can do a long exposure on a digital, with so little noise. I can't wait to try it with my 20D. Someday I'd like to do some star trails in the southern hemisphere. I have a few that I did in Canada, check them out if you are interested.

Hi Cheryl, thanks for your comment. I didn't use a special lens here or post production to create the circular star trails. The star trails are actually created by the long exposure, around about 15 minutes which exposes the movement of the sky around the south celestial pole (which I know to be about four lengths of the southern cross in the direction of the base..if that makes sense). The sky was particularly starry that night and I was glad to see they came through in the shot. Cheers

thats pretty cool! Very good composition with the houses as foreground. Did you adjust the houses to match the background in exposure? It seems to perfectly balanced. Great idea and brilliant shot.

Splendid work Mark. You must live in a dark area for such a photo to work, the street lights here would not allow more than a few seconds exposure. Makes me want to bust the light out the front of my house, just kidding... where is that rock...

Hi Robin. Thanks for your kind words. I did use a shutter release cable (RS60-E3). The exposure was achieved with bulb setting and closed the aperture right down. It was a bit difficult to set the shot up as it was very dark so I used a torch while looking through the eyepiece to shine a bit of light on the subject to frame it correctly, then took the shot over around 15 minutes.

Stunning shot Mark, must must MUST go out and try this. How did you hold the shutter down? Remote Controller RC-1 or RC-5 on Bulb exposure setting? not much noise on it either which surprises me as the 300D doesn't have a mirror lock up.
FANTASTIC!!

Makes the house look spooky. I thought you needed to get away from the city/suburb lights to get shots like this. Love the celestial world you captured, great job with the long exposure. Congrats on the SC.

Taras. May I just say, your star shots put mine to shame. Your milky way and celestial shots are amazing. It is kind of comforting to know that although across the other side of the planet, we still look at the same sky with a few different stars, and have that connection through this technology. Cheers.
