Thilo, thank you for stopping by. Blush ! Nice that you place an anaesthesia before touching my sore spot ;-) After my PS learning curve, I was infected with the "postcarditis virus", a dangerous disease that leads to heavy overuse of PS and recurrent kitch attacks. Dont know where I got the virus, maybe from some bad boys on another photo site (not UF, of course). Joking aside, I know what you mean ! Heavy PS use is quite normal when you have new skills and want to try them out. The next step is wise dosage of the magic potion, that`s what I really promise ;-)

Alan, I use PS CS - maybe that vivid light blending is a new feature of PS CS. Another feature of PS CS is 48bit color mode, a great advantage to the earlier versions. To come close to the tonal quality of film, it is a good idea to shoot in RAW, and work on 16bit/channel TIF only

I'm amazed! I've used all the PS techniques that you mentioned but felt that the improvements that you made on your picture went well beyond that. I can find "Hard Light", "Soft Light", "Multiply" etc (in place of "Normal") but I have not found the "Vivid Light" mode that you and others have mentioned - neither in Photoshop 6 or Photoshop Elements.

Alan, thank you for stopping by ! I am no PS expert at all, but after a long learning curve I grasped the layers function, at last. A short step by step description of my favorite layers technique: 1. Show the Layers toolbox: Window > Layers (or F7) 2. Right-Click there on "Layer1" resp. "Background Layer" > Duplicate Layer. Or simply click-draw it on the "new layer" button below. Assign a meaningful name, e.g. "light" 3. Set the light blending mode for the layer: change from "normal" to "vivid light", for example. Good for somewhat flat looking tones. Or "multiply" mode, great for superb sky colors. Oops, looks awful... Now play with the opacity slider, check if this blending mode is effective, for example at 20-30% opacity (look only at regions of interest, where you want to place the effect, ignore the ugly side effects elsewhere, you can mask them away, see below). Try other light contrast algorithms, as "multiply", "soft light" or "hard light", they might be more effective. Then set opacity to 100% again for masking. 4. Now: Layer > Add Layer Mask > Hide All. The Layer Mask Thumbnail in the Layers Toolbox is all black, thus all pixels of the top layer are hidden. The basal layer (Layer1 or Background Layer) is visible again. 5. Now comes the fun: To put the desired effect on certain parts of the image, you can paint now with the white brush on the black layer mask to unmask these regions selectively. But you can chose what you want, e.g. the Brush Tool (Hardness about 10-20% works best, Master Diameter depends on image. For landscapes, sky/ ground transition the Gradient Tool is perfect, with the Gradient Picker set to white/ trasnsparent. ok, here you would brush with white on the pistil (first, click on the black layer gradient thumbnail to select it), opacity and flow about 30% (sometimes even lower), to get smooth transitions. You see the light effect coming through, stop when enough. 6. If overdone, you can toggle foreground color to black and paint over with black to erase unwanted effects or soften the effect. 7. At last, you can play with opacity again to fine-tune the effect. Often, 20 to 50% is enough. 8. When satisfied, Layer > Flatten image (or Merge Down, in case of several layers, for selective application of a mask). Uff. Thats all. A quite universal tool, you can apply this technique also for selective sharpening and so on. Have fun !
Regards, Carsten

Hi Carsten,
I don't see a lot of potential for improving your impressive PS skills ;-)
I mean: wow. this one rocks. you're the pro.
While browsing through your portfolio, I really appreciate your abouts and the detailed specs of your work. perhaps someday, I will try to get the point ;-)
perhaps one mild concern: some images are so full of PS work that they loose part of their natural look. It would be just a pity as you have such enormous landscape in front of the house. the subjects itself are so impressive... hope you know what I mean. -)
Ich ziehe jedenfalls meinen Hut vor so viel genialen Bildern in so kurzer Zeit... das war wohl der stärkste auftritt eines UF-Neulings ever ;-)
best wishes and hope fully we stay in contact,
thilo

We have all been stunned by the finished result - wunderbar! By submitting the 'before' picture you have clearly shown that a mediocre picture can be turned into a work of true art. I feel that you could make a lot of people very happy by taking them through the steps of creating and merging layers with the menu and tool options that you used. We could then apply some of these ideas to our own photos.

Lily, thank you for stopping by and commenting on my image. You hit the nail ! Obviously you are very familiar with PS, indeed it is a result of "painting" with different layers, for the sky I wanted to pull out as much color and detail as possible. So I started with CaptureOne (DRebel ed.) conversion, made underexposed TIFFs for the sun and sun area and made a composite of them with radial blended gradient layer masks, color contrast was enhanced with the "multiply" instead of normal light option. Monitors can show not as much dynamic range as there is in a digital RAW. You can pull out a lot of unseen color and detail when starting with the conversion underexposed, and make a 16bit/ channel TIFF. A lot of tech stuff, probably indigestible, but sound more complicated than it is.

Michael, our race for maximum color saturation is a draw ;-) You prefer tuning with HSL, my preferred technique is doctoring on color contrast with blending options and layer masks. Maybe you know all that stuff, but try out a multiply blended layer, e.g. masked for the sky. I always have to hold my fire not to ovderdo that, in most cases a 30% to 50% opacity is enough.

Toni, you are right with the connotation to painting. This is clearly more of a digital painting than a work on natural landscape photography. Dont misunderstand, I appreciate both but this image represents my feelings I had at that moment better than a natural colored photo. Why digital painting ? The PS technique of masking and unmasking with the brush and different blending modes (multiply, vivid light and so on) feels like painting with light, and gives a lot of creative options. Unfortunately, I am antalented painter, so I have to use PS and my mouse ;-) And have fun, of course

Carsten, Thank you for posting the before picture. The incredible work you did on the sky still is a mystery to me. Did you use different layers, and applied layer mask to parts of each individual layer where you wanted to hide and finally collapse these layers into one? The sun is shining very brightly at one spot and I was wondering how you achieved that and other dark areas that blend in with the lighter parts so seamlessly.

Hi Carsten - just been surfing the Usefilm site and came across this wonderful picture. Not sure what all the technical work you did on it actually means - but I am sure about the finished product - an absolutely magnificent photo - well done Jeff

You are very good at stitching! This has a great degree of artistic merit IMHO. First, the composition is excellent, but when taking in the other dynamics of this I see that you have threads of color going throughout..golds, greens, browns, blacks...all...can be seen in the land and sky. This is something any great painter would strive to achieve with a brush, and doesn't always occur so accomodatingly in nature. Also, the textural range is wonderful..the rough grains against the silken sky, which itself is textured by the cloud formations, provides yet another set of ranges. You have captured with your camera and "stitched" as you say a masterpiece (again, in my humble opinion :) Best regards, Antonia.
