Thanks for spending a minute commenting here.
I appreciate what you are saying but the intention of the shot was designed at a 'homely lifestyle magazine look', so I've included the surroundings to emphasize this. By keeping the OOF you get the overall effect but there is something to finally focus on.
Perhaps I'll try a few closer as per your suggestion to find out none the less.

I agree with the previous poster - wish you could be closer to the dish - the browns are great though.

I think you are on to something, but need to get closer to the subject. I like the warm tones and the shallow DOF. But the focal point is a bit lost.
