g'day Steve, it may be accepted practice to adjust another's image but I can't help feeling it is just plain rude, as a creative artist I present my images as I want them to be presented, it's quite ok for another to suggest a different presentation but I feel it is going too far to actually make changes to MY image, I expect others to respect my artistic integrity
as for ratings, why do people care so much, I don't even look at my ratings and never give ratings to others, I believe critiques are far more important, I know my images are good, I don't need some BS rating system to tell me, but I do need to know if and how my images affect others and how my future images may be created so as to be more effective

Ray, I don't consider it rude of Michael to present an adjusted version of my image. It's a common and accepted practice at another site where I participate (photo.net). That said, I sense that there are some people on this site who maliciously downrate photos. Unfortunately, that's also a common practice at photo.net. What's nice about this site is that you can deactivate the ratings option for your uploads.

beautiful image Steve, beautifully presented, if your choice is blue toning, then so be it, I think it extremely rude for another to take your image and 'adjust' it

FOR CHRIS HUNTER:
I believe I used an aperture of f13 and that the exposure time was around 1/8 sec. Needless to say, I used a sturdy tripod.

CONGRATULATIONS, Michael, on being selected for the Featured Critique of the Day! You are correct that this image has a subtle blue tone and that the effect is by design. A similar effect can be achieved by toning B&W prints with selenium. I like your more contrasty version of the image, although it does have the appearance of being a bit over sharpened.

Don't get me wrong, it is just a personal thing, but I love the B&W without the blue tones. I am by no mean proficient in PS so what people do there always amazes me. Like I said personal opinion, but I like the true B&W. We can discuss the small details till we are blue in the face, no pun intended, but that fact is this is a magnificent image that was masterfully framed and exposed.

John:
I pulled down the image to see and noticed that it is not a pure black and white, but instead a B&W with a blue tone, I think by design.
In this version I converted the photo to pure black and white and adjusted the brightness and contrast of the sky independantly of the ground features for a little more contrast. Is this what you were thinking?

I believe your choice for using B&W was well planned. I wonder if the contrast would be diffrent (more) if it were shot with B&W film. I find conversiuons tend to leave the image with more of a gray scale than true and absolute black and whites. Please don't take me wrong I love the image. It is a great photo.
