About This is the outflow from Bonscale tarn, a small lake cradled in a cwm on the edge of Bonscale Fell in the English Lake District. The image appealed for the contrasts in lighting - the overcast foreground, brightly lit middle distance and the menacing clouds. I used 2 stops of hard ND grad and 3 stops of soft ND grad filters angled so that the shaded area lined up with the bright edge of the illuminated middle distance. This allowed me to maintain detail in the foreground and added to the menace in the clouds.

Love how the various color tones in the foreground rock, are picked up throughout the landscape beyond. Just received my copy of First Light. What an incredible book. Thanks for turning me on to it. It's sure to bring many hours of inspiration and pure visual enjoyment.

Excellent work, high skill in the use of the ligth; I think that the stone in the center low of the pic is a little heavy in volume. Regards Alessandro.

Beautiful work. I like how you have balanced the image with the foreground rock.

Chris, I don't know how I remember the filters that I use but I think it's because of the intensity of the moment. Generally there's a fair bit of waiting and then a mad rush as the light reaches its optimum and I have to select the filters, try a test shot or two and when it's right the image, the feel of the moment and the beauty of the surroundings tend to burn themselves into my mind. I can clearly remember the making of a good deal of shots going back a year or so and although I might not be totally accurate on the exposure, when I check the info I'm usually about right!

P.S. How on earth do you remember what filters you used?! Do you have a book?!
