About In the long arcades that lead to the great Asakusa Temple there are many souvenir shops. If you want a miniature temple lantern, or Buddha keyring... they are SURE to have one. I find some of them quite impossible to guess the purpose of (or why anyone would want to buy them).

FYI, John, the lanterns variously say "Asakusa" (the name of the temple) "Thunder & Lightning" (the name of the most famous gate) and--more inscrutably--"Official Business" (which is what the equivalent of the police used to have on their lanterns). Why anyone would want that on their souvenir lantern I fail to understand. [grin]

Good morning Roger - You know I've looked at this sort of thing for a long time and it just really hit me. Those are not designs on the lanterns, they are writing. So for me they have been less tacky as designs than they have become as writing. The mind boggles as to what they say...
Cheers - John B

Delightful, Rob. I now have a grand-daughter who will soon be of an age to appreciate toys like these, so I have an added interest in them...

This fits my pre-conceived idea of something Japanese, with riotous colors and intricate detail everywhere. How do you find anything in these stores?

An extraordinary collection of paraphernalia, beautifully photographed and presented as ever.
Such an even exposure!
Best regards, Chris

Excellent DOF and exposure and a wealth of colors and eyehurting details. To calm your eyes down I attached some trinkets from abroad. Regards, Rob.

I love these little stores, and you have captured the essence of them perfectly. I suppose it is the combination of color, uniqueness, packaging and the ability to fill such small stores with so much merchandise that attracts me to them. This reminds me of the many little 100 yen stores on the periphery of chinatown in Yokohama. The only thing that could improve your photo would be to have a couple of children absorbed in the display.
