ORTAKÖY MOSQUE One of the historical buildings in Ortaköy is Ortaköy Mosque, which dates back to the Ottoman Baroque Period. It is located over a quay. The mosque was ordered built by Emperor Abdülmecit in 1854. The architect was Nikogos Balyan, who was a member of the famous Balyan family, the designers of many buildings in Istanbul. It has a square area set aside for worship and in front of it there is the two story Sultan's quarters. The mosque has one cupola. There are four big archs at the corners of the square. The large attractive pendentives can be seen from the outside of the mosque. The pendentives and the cupola are covered with lead. Light comes through the big windows of the mosque. The external part of the mosque is ornamented in high relief. The Sultan's quarters is to the north of the mosque, which has a ÔU' floor plan.
Ortaköy mosque is worth a visit for it is located in one of the most picturesque spots in Istanbul.
