Amazing capture at 1/500 and nicely finished with the f/8. Beautiful. I give your photo a 7/7 because it is wonderfully done, nice choices for shutter and aperture--I love the background. Gary.

Very nice. I gave up on trying to get hummingbirds this close. In some gardens, they hover for the briefest time. But they generally don't hover that close. I thought only a feeder would get such a shot. Great photo (another 'favorites' for me).

Kelly: We live at 9100 feet of elevation in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. We get four kinds of hummingbirds here, Of the four, the Rufous are the most numerous but we also get Broadtail, Black-Chinned, and Calliope. I believe the most common hummingbirds in the midwest are the Ruby-Throated. They are also very beautiful. Do a bit of research in how to attract them and you might be surprised how close they will allow you to come.

Great capture Fred. Congratulations being Editors Choice. Very well deserved. Very beautiful saturated colors and wonderful details in the feathers of the Hummingbird and movement in the wings. Your a lucky guy to have so many of these lovely birds in your yard and a excellent photographer to make such fantastic shots of them while they are in flight....Best regards, Harry

Craig: To reliably freeze hummingbird wings takes about 1/8000 of a second which requires high-speed flash equipment. The only flash I use is for fill light so that the backgrounds don't go dark.

This particular hummingbird is far and away the most aggressive of the local summer residents. They fight constantly among themselves and drive away any other birds who approach the feeders. The males are quite striking as they are cinnamon colored with a bright red gorget on the throat. The females outnumber the males by about ten to one here.
To Lori: In the Sibley Guide to Birds they are shown as migratory residents in all of California. I saw one of them in Seward, Alaska last July and they winter in Mexico so they should be coming through your area this spring.
