Next time you can get Dax to pose (ie. not run away when the camera comes out!) you could also try using just a little fill flash to put some catchlights in his eyes so that both eyes stand out. Either that, or I've had some luck with a white piece of cardboard to bounce the light onto the shadowed area of the face with my Golden Retriever. (this scares my one dog, though)
Other than that, I really like the framing... very intimate. What a great expression!

Thank you for the suggestion, I really do appreciate it. You are right, that definetely brings out the detail better! There is only one problem, it doesn't look like Dax anymore. : ) He has very a dark, contrasty blend of colors.. I have quite the decision to make now!

Great portrait, Excellent DOF for such a close shot.
Expression on dog's face is wonderful, he's looking right at the camera.
I think it might be just a little bit lighter, to bring out more detail on the shadow side of the face. I lightened it up a bit to see, let me know what you think.
