That's very right, Stan! The quality is generated mainly with the shot. It is only altered with additional work, but its generation is in the camera.
And another right thing to do is to avoid a priory assigninment of pre-constructed symbolical meanings to images, as you say. The impression of each spectator will generate such a "meaning" since there is no such thing as "inherent meaning" of any image. I see too many guys trying to tell what their images symbolically stand for but it never really works. Just keep it up this way and keep well too.
Cheers!
Nick

Thanks Nick, I am just glad that this image stands on it's own and presents itself to others imaginations. Fun to read the replies and the visuals others describe they see in it. I tried several color renditions but this one really was the one I liked. Thanks for your insight and encouragement. My goal is to have fun and not be in a fixed mindset that would keep me from being more creative. The great thing about the camera and today's technology is the endless permutations possible when post processing. Needless to say, if it is good out of camera you have more to work with. Be well my friend, Stan

Hi Andy, I was thinking another title could be "The Ice Man Comes Home." So interesting to read what this image evokes for different people. It is fun to just delve into PS and see what happens. I am learning CS2 from a 9 DVD set I found at a thrift store. I am slowly getting it. Many of my images are out of camera with only a levels adjustment and maybe some contrast and brightness. So glad that this is a fun image for you as well. Have a great day and be well, Stan

Maybe the returning heat is beginning to afect my eye, I like this shot becuase every time I return to it I see something different. The composition and layering of colors really wroks well. One minute I see a widow mourning her husband, another a wanderer enjoying a walk through a valley. Thanks for sharing these shots. andy

Normally such a work is not really my case, Stan, simply because most of the time I see "smudges" with no concept. But in this case we see exactly the opposite. Yes, it is heavily re-touched but it is an integrated, tight image, where the method followed the concept and not the other way around. I would really take this one in a small series of examples about retouching and what it is able to generate.
And here it generates something between a real scene and an imaginary one, or if you like some kind of "simulation" of what one might "see" in mind as a vague kind of remembrance or vision. What I find so striking is that the image is not flat at all. The mounts are far far behind the Grim Reaper. He seems to wander silently in the middle of nowhere out of no particular reason.
Another thing that I find very well presented is the color transition from the top to the feet of the mountains. It looks exactly as it should look and still it inludes the special look of an abstraction.
In front of such good work I don't care that much what it has really been because it counts much more what it *is* for my eye exactly the way it is.
Cheers!
Nick
