Location City -  Damascus
State -  CAPITAL CITY
Country - Syria   Syria
About The Grand Mosque of Damascus', also known as the Ummayad Mosque (Arabic: جامع بني أمية الكبير, transl. Ğām' Banī 'Umayyah al-Kabīr), is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. Located in one of the holiest sites in the old city of Damascus, it is of great architectural importance.
The mosque holds a shrine which is said to contain the head of John the Baptist (Yahya), honored as a prophet by Muslims and Christians alike. The head was supposedly found during the excavations for the building of the mosque. The tomb of Saladin stands in a small garden adjoining the north wall of the mosque.

In 2001 Pope John Paul II visited the mosque, primarily to visit the relics of John the Baptist. It was the first time a pope paid a visit to a mosque.
Between 706 and 715 the current mosque was built in its place. According to the legend, Al-Walid himself initiated the demolition by driving a golden spike into the church. At that point in time, Damascus was one of the most important cities in the Middle East and would later become the capital of the Umayyad caliphate.

For me it was of the most impressive buildings I've seen, a wonderful piece of architecture!
Have a nice day, Jenxx

Hele mooie Jen.
Vooral de lichtinval en de verscheidene tinten maken de foto erg speciaal.
groetjes

Alain

Hello dear Jen .... .. another WoW momment - I agree- one of The Most Impressive Buildings 'I have ever seen' as well . Excellent details , clarity and tones.

I am curious as to why the grounds stop being golden and reflective in the foreground .. maybe this is just the way it was built and somewhat an entrance /exit ... (?)

Thanks for sharing both the image and the information - it is facinating :))
Hugs,
Michele~

I was also surprised the Pope had visit this
wonderful mosque! Happy too I could go in as a
tourist.
This might not look this huge but it was, the
side was even more interesting, like one big
museum, strange walking there barefeet in a
burka, suppose thats different from Romania as
well;))
The pavement wasn't wet, just polished as a
mirror, had somehow the idea of slipping like a
kid does;)) No, I behaved.....of course!!!!;))

Enjoy your evening, Jenxx

It's interesting how the older religious buildings are, the more similar they are. Apart from one or two details, I'd have identified this as a monastery in Romania or Bulgaria.

There's a lovely light here, and the whole scene is enhanced by the reflections in the wet paving.

Wow Jen.. another wow from me.. I like the capture and the warm light on this composition.. I like that silhouetted child with its reflection.. in my opinion a little crop of the lower part will perhaps intense the focus of the eye on the subject. crop up to eliminate that drainage.
great shot!well done..
regards..
