An interesting and fruitable discussion! Thanks a lot Gustavo! Most of the time I don't see that here. We must touch many subjects more detailed and so we must talk, discuss, question, ... all those things. Real pals always talk with each other.
Undoubtfully it is a portrait. This is not the question. The question is, is it good enough in the sense of photography as a portrait? I don't think so. The subsequent question is, does the poster want to know why it isn't good? Here you are the only person that can answer. And I think that you already decided that you don't want to hear why it isn't good, as you indirectly accepted by saying that you don't care about that because it is your child. (This conclusion is only my *interpretation* - please correct me if I am wrong.) So, at least as long as there is no interest whatever to elaborate on an image of bad quality, there is also no reason to post it.
Of course it is logical to expect that most of the time we will take portraits of relatives, friends, know persons, etc. And exactly for this reason I mentioned the analogous images from Avi, or Andre. But they are *good* images, quite in contrast to this one. And it is this the reason why they are interesting to the spectator, and not because they are beloved persons of Avi or Andre or anybody else. This is an immensely important differentiation that the majority of posters here seem to not know. In other words, I am not here to see your baby. I am here to see good images, and to discuss and learn about photography. Should I care for your (or anybody else's) pride as a father, mother, child, friend of some depicted person, I wouldn't call this a forum for photography but rather for public relations. But this is no dating place, and no introducing place for families, and definitely no place to make the announcement of the own pride/happiness/sorrow/whatever more important than photography.
A good image may of couse contain all those human feelings. *But* the human feelings do not necessarily contain a good image - I hope you can see the difference. Let's be subjective. The photographic world doesn't even care about my wonderful girlfriend and my feelings for her. It cares about a beautiful *image* of her.
You didn't really address any of my points but rather described your feelings. But definite arguments have to be either rejected by definite arguments, or be accepted as true. Anything else is too weak to me.

Que estas cuestiones influyen en la opinión de los demás (y otras también, muchas opiniones están movidas por sentimientos tan emotivos como la envidia, para darte otro ejemplo) y cómo califican a una foto.....y sí, influyen, pero como siempre, la calificación que uno recibe es responsabilidad de los demás... que son los que en definitiva te están juzgando según su parecer y buen entender...
En fin, este es mi punto de vista sobre esta cuestión y espero puedas entenderme bien a pesar de las diferencia idiomáticas que tenemos.

Sobre esta cuestión, Nick, y hasta donde puedo entenderte el ingles, sin dudas tenemos punto de vistas coincidentes en algunos aspectos, pero muy diferentes en otros.
Veamos, esta foto no es una foto de álbum familiar, es un RETRATO: “(Del lat. retractus). 1. m. Pintura o efigie principalmente de una persona. 2. m. Descripción de la figura o carácter, o sea, de las cualidades físicas o morales de una persona. 3. m. Aquello que se asemeja mucho a una persona o cosa.4. m. Imagen de una persona dibujada a partir de los rasgos físicos que ofrece quien la conoce o la ha visto”. Esto según la Real Academia de la lengua Española. Yo agrego “imagen fotografiada de una persona…”
Es el retrato de un bebe, como cualquier bebe del mundo, un sujeto absolutamente válido para la fotografía, siendo además, que el retrato es un género o categoría dentro de la fotografía reconocido por todo el mundo. No es el mejor de los retratos, ni siquiera el mejor de los míos, pero si uno que me satisface y lo publico a partir de la posibilidad y libertad que tengo de publicar retratos en un sitio de fotografía. Hasta ahí, cualquiera puede mirarlo o no, apreciarlo o no, criticarlo o no, calificarlos o no.
Además es un retrato de mi hijo, lo cual es circunstancial, pero bastante lógico, uno hace retratos con personas, con cualquier persona, y en ningún lado está escrito que las personas no puedan ser familiares, yo hago retratos con las personas que conozco, pero en general los hago con mis hijos, porque realmente me complace hacerlo y son los sujetos que más a mano tengo dispuestos a posar para mí y que además siempre salen lindos…
Sin dudas un lugar como UseFilm, además de un foro para mostrar fotografías, es una comunidad de personas, muchos amigos, y muchas veces hay un contenido emotivo, personal y significativo para un grupo de participantes en algunas fotos, y de hecho en esta foto lo hay (muchos se han alegrado de poder conocer a Germán, incluso muchos me lo habían pedido explícitamente), pero no solo en esta, en muchas fotos, y esto es absolutamente natural y perfectamente válido también porque los participantes somos personas sensibles y afectivas, no máquinas…

It sounds as if you would accept what I said about "family albums" Gustavo.
Should we start posting any possible image here just because we like the idea that *our* babies, moms, dads, wives, girlfriends, etc have to be known by the whole world? I have also so many terrible images from the photographic point of view. Should I post them for letting everybody know about *my* people? Is that what we meet for in this forum?
This is definitely not a place to post images of which we *know* that they are less than average, and of which at the same time we don't have any questions in the photographic sense. We can do that in forums where everybody is so eager to get "famous" for the own baby, or the own whatever. There are enough such forums around.
Another thing to wonder about is that this image receives such a high rating here. And remember that this is a rating in photography and not in family affairs. Does this say something to you about the *reasons* for that high rating? And how can we relate these reasons to the aim that this forum claims to have? Is it responsible from the side of the photographer and from the side of the "commentators" to misuse the sense of the comment itself for sending sugar coated nonsense to some father, mother, boyfriend, girlfriend, son, or daughter? Where does the photography stay then? Isn't that the same attitude that makes for example nowadays' politicians to care more about their shiny image than about their work? And if we complain about them, then is it consequent to do exactly the same?
Don't get me wrong, I wish you all happiness of this world, with your family, your children, your surroundings, everything. But I can't have your kind of relationship to the very young human being that is depicted. It is indifferent to me. Just another of the millions of babies on this world, so what do you think that is so special about it for somebody that isn't the father or mother, etc? It has to be a good image in your own opinion, or an image of which you have to ask questions about, or similar.
BTW, did you see the images of Avi's daughter? They would be exactly as good even if she would be anybody else's daughter. Andre Denis also posted an image of his wife. But what an image it was! It would be still great even if this would be some other woman. That alone speaks for both of them, doesn't it?

Muchas gracias david, realmente aprecio tus palabras y sí, no es la mejor foto, como agregué en el about: la luz es pobre, el bebé se mueve permanentemente, no hace nada que le pidas y la ley de Murphy siempre te juega en contra: la mejor sonrisa es siempre la más desenfocada!, pero bueno en este caso, la intención es otra...:-)
El laburo realmente es mucho y estábamos bastante olvidados, Julia fue mucho mas benigna..:-), pero bueno, a lo hecho, pecho!...y en este caso, esto, es más verdadero que nunca...:-)

A good timing for a very symoathetic moment here, Gustavo, and a relatively good toning too, though it does already go into a too high red amount of hues on the skin. It lacks a good focus too. Perhaps good in the family album but not really much more than family memories.
