Oha, wait wait, Jen! I am definitely not a master in anyway - and I'm afraid also in anything at all! :-D
One doesn't need to be a master to just speak the iwn mind, and speaking the own mind is only for exchange reasons, as we can't read minds. So, whatever I say it's no way "objective". It's only my personal view of it translated into words.
The critiques on images (or anything else) are bot only good for notes and likes/dislikes. They are good for that kind of "backward engineering" that perhaps gives also some idea about what the photographer could have done different at shooting time. It just could add something more to the already available knowledge/skill.
Now, on the image you attached to your message, well, it doesn't really reach the exciting look that the other one has. Things like details and lighting are OK, but the composition doesn't bring out that kind of tension. The first one put something into a very strong perspective, and it put it in a way that says "Bang!". The attached one is too "tamed" for that.
Cheers!
Nick

Dear John, txs for your reply, I will try to keep these kind of ideas, as someone has to try them:) Lots of ideas come up when driving for ages at these long tracks in Africa, but also brainstorming with my friends brings up weird ideas..lol Thanks again, xx Jen

Thanks a lot John!! I keep on bringing up weird and also common ideas, as that is my way of working.... sometimes i'm just on my way and these strange ideas just come up, sometimes to be worked out at once!! On my long trip it frustrated me many times I couldn't work out my thoughts and ideas.......what I learned is rather go out there by yourself, making MY shots then together with someone stepping on them and not even understanding what I like! Just ignoring me, sitting and waiting there with this grumpy face...loll Hope you know what I mean? xxJen

Really appreciate your comment Nick, please stay like that! I have seen before how you just say as it is...something I, myself don't dare really, as well as I feel an amateur, not worth telling others what is good or bad...;) I think we all need some kind of master to tell us these more obejective thoughts and ideas, as I don't see what others see, although a shot is always 'what's in the eye of the behoulder'
If you are at the place of 'crime' you shoot what your eye sees.....if there is enough time you crop at the place delict itself, sometimes you just overlook the whole area and don't notice colours, lines or shades, in my opinion!
About the cropping I could have cropped a bit on the top yeah, you're right, it's something I just see through your eyes, did try it with this one too, works well!! Good homework for me;) Txs dear Nick

I find the bright (almost shiny) stones with the rusty colors and the sharp details under the rails very well fitting the overall perspective of the scene, Jen. They cooperate with the leading lines that are set by the rails themselves, making the felt distance stronger. The idea is not weird at all - actually it is very interesting.
Especially the rose/pink colors of the clothes put a very sudden, very strong mark into the continuum of depth. The contrast to the rusty colors of the ground is strong, and so it adds that kind of "kitschy" attitude of Hong-Kong made decorative objects of the 70s in the rather steely, or even industrial definition of depth. A very welcome contradiction here. Almost like fashion photography with a nice dosis of punk.
The grass at the right complements nicely the rose/pink tones of the clothes, but then that hill behind it seems a bit "half". It adds a bit of not really usefull business to the otherwise strict composition. Could perhaps elimination of the upper part with the hill and the sky, and inclusion of more of the rails and the near field strengther it further? (Attachment.)
A very well thought out inscenation - not only a good image.
Cheers,
Nick

well that pose is surely original, the subject, the idea to use the rails like that is great for me, and as I always say, it's importante time to time to try something different and YES! you get the originality here Jen... my complements!

Liefs, Harry

Of course I have a darker side Har..don't we all have? But I also like to try things out, hanging over clifs etc. Somehow I have this little angle around me..:)
Maar ik had samen met een vriendin afgesproken om meer van dit soort shots te maken, we doen veel samen aan fotografie en onderzoeken, dit was een soort van try-out samen met de road-block, ben alweer verder aan het broeden;)liefs Jen
