As a result of the distruction by tropical storm Ivan a few years ago, there are many dead trees in the campground in Gulf Shores. This is very unfortunate as the campground was once forested by a thick, rich Savana and is now almost treeless. On the positive side, it is now the home to numberous species of woodpeckers including redheaded and the redbelly woodpeckers. This was my first encounter with these birds. I would have like to have got better shots but they would not let me get close.
