Kenneth: These are called amanita muscaria. I see them in the mountain meadows here in Colorado all the time. They are everywhere. Poisonous and hallucinogenic too. http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~5517.asp
Funny thing: I saw a Pine Grosbeak the same day I last saw one of these on the top of Shrine Pass, near Vail.
