Another GREAT shot. Love the bright colors & the sky & the one light on above. Seems like a very busy, photogenic place. Would love to have the apartment at the left!

Glad you asked. Founded in 1907, Pike Place Market was a city-sponsored experiment to help reduce the high cost of local produce. It was created as a means for local farmers to sell directly to shoppers, without benefit of middlemen who were suspected of inflating prices. An immediate success, it thereafter became a permanent fixture in the vicinity of Pike Place and First Avenue.
The two original ordinances passed regarding the Market effectively determined its method of operation. In the establishing ordinance, the City vested direct responsibility in the Street Department, which painted stall spaces on the planked street surface of Pike Place and assigned a police officer to allot spaces. A second ordinance passed in November 1907 instituted one of the basic rules of market operations. It required that sales in the market be limited to food and food products "raised, produced or manufactured by the person offering the same for sale."
In conclusion, it's a VERY cool place.

Still light at 10pm? Yeah, that happens when you get close to the North Pole. Those dudes still throwing the fish at each other or did they call it a night? A very nice shot Paul. Not sure how i feel about Seattle... I think I like Vancouver better...let me think about it. Looks like a beautiful postcard-great job !!! PS. Who's Pike BTW? does he hang with Mike and Ike? (You know Mike and Ike candy? Ms "M" always buys it....)

Yeah, judging is a fickle thing. While Pike Place is an iconic image of Seattle, this image is forever available to anyone walking by at night.
I took what I believe is a much stronger, and far more unique photo while I was up there: http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1134401

LOL! I have the same problems on MY notebook, Joel, as my monitor's max resolution is 1024x768, so about 90 of the image fits on monitor. ;)
Thanks for the kind words. I was pretty surprised to see that myself.

Very nice, Paul!
great details, and very sharp! I love haunting movement of people to give the image life.
I can smell the wafting fish scent from the ice:) A great place...and well captured for a night shot...cause that place is just *packed* otherwise!
well done!

Alex, I wasn't sure what I'd get on this shot, so I captured numerous images varying from -2 to +2 Exposure Value. The best exposure turned out to be this one at +1.
thanks for the comments.

This shot seems like it would have been a difficult shot to meter, seeing the different kinds of light sources presented, but you definitely nailed it here...What a perfect exposure of a very simple yet entertaining setting!! Nice capture and congrats on the SC!!

Honestly, Phil, it's no more difficult than having a tripod and a remote shutter cable. With that equipment, I could then shoot at ISO 100 with impugnity, and even crank down to f 11 to make sure I had deep focus. I also took numerous shots, varying my exposure values. This shot was most pleasing to me, at EV +1.
So...Yes, you can take images like this.

Hi Paul, Congrats on the award! I like night shots like this. As long as you have your tripod, you can have light and motion under your full control. The blurred effect of people walking and moving around works well. I Like the neon lights! This one kinda brings me there!

Well done night shot. I really like the composition--the large neon signs, the dark shape of the building to the right. Interesting.
