Outstanding prism effect. The colors and clarity are perfect. No need to be embarrassed about your setup. Some of my best shots have been taken in my bathroom. Like you, it's the only room in my house without windows so I can play around with lighting.

The CD man is back and how. Excellent photo, John. I'm glad you risked embarrassment to show us the set up. Thank you. I like the colour in the background, like a ray of light shining down. Cheers, Ann.

I really like your original idea. It has interesting balance as well, with the marble being off to the left and the thin streaks of red and green on the right. Very good reflective texture, with the colours of the CD inside the marble. Congratulations.

I don't know if I agreee with Hugo. I catch myself studying the marble in great detail, inluding the flaws, trying to make sense of it all. That's what makes it an interesting photo, in my opinion.
I could study it even more, just because the marble itself is real interesting and trying to make out the various shapes, reflections and refractions are mind boggling.
Best, Dave

The beauty in this piece John (aside from the tremendous bursts of extreme color)for me is the thought process that went into the creation of the image. It's refreshing to know that great minds are at work out there pushing the limits, changing the way the creative process is perceived

Very Creative and an innovative approach as well. I do agree with Hugo . . . The imperfections in the marble would have been great as a sole subject . . . but the two mix together like water and oil. ;) That being said . . . it was an absolutely great idea and the control of the light was solved in what I would have to say is one very innovative way. I like the colors and the creativity.

Hugo: yes, I think a clear, undamaged marble would produce a better result. Looking at it now I think I would also prefer the background to be a little darker. This was perhaps the best of the 80 or so I took - the main issue is that the slightest movement of one of the objects (including the camera...) changes everything. I do feel that I now understand the effect of different camera settings in the setup and will be coming back to this subject in due course. John

Hi John, I like the setup, and the idea of using the glass marble and the refraction of the light to create an even more intricate pattern.
I think one of the keys to succes for these types of shots is the clean, crisp tones, showing the entire spectrum, as well as the pattern it creates.
And in that respect I feel a bit ambiguous about the "polution" in the marble; it distrorts the effect, creating a rather cluttered / smudgy feel.
On it's own, that would already produce an interesting shot, but in combination with the clean, crisp patterns of the CDs, I think the composition is a bit torn between the two; showing too much.
IMO, it's either a clean shot, with the patterns as dominant subject, or a more abstract close up of the marble that would've produced the most appealing / intriguing shot.
Cheers,
Hugo

Here's the setup. Actually, I did have a genuinely good reason for doing this in the bathroom. There are no windows, so I had full control over the lighting, including the six ceiling spots that added to the effect.
