This photo was taken on 2nd Oct. Interestingly that's the day when we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. The great Indian leader preached non-violence. May be this shot is a poetic justice to the American massacre in Iraq.

Dear Chuck, congratulations on the POD. Disregarding what's going on in the shot which represents something I totally disagree with (the occupation of Iraq) it's very nice composition. You have a lot of talent. Hope you can get out ASAP - or maybe even sooner (and in one piece). This isn't a personal attack on you or the other soldiers but it sure is about the gang at the top, sitting behind desks, away from the danger, and running the show (please read my about on my front page - it's been there for almost 3 years). You've been very polite and kind on my shots which I very much appreciate and i just hope you can get out soon, before the civil war starts and have a career in Photojournalism (or another area of photography you enjoy) as a civilian. I'm sure you'd make a good living at it. I hope we can agree to disagree and have respect for each other even though we have a completely different POV on this one (but not all of them. My Mother's Uncle was a Submarine Commander in WW II - saved his whole crew. He was a great and brilliant man and helped raise me when I was a child. Taught me how to use a camera). All the best, Mark PS On a lighter note. I'm sure all you guys are under extreme stress so I would suggest checking out the work of UF Photographer "ppdix" for a little mental "R and R". I'm sure his work will be greatly appreciated over there. Take care and keep your head down.

Hi, Chuck, I missed this one when it first went up, but I'm glad I caught it, and congrats on the POD! It has sure stirred up a lot of comment, photographically and otherwise, but that's not surprising, either. Apart from your excellent eye for composition, it also shows the conditions you guys are working under, when after being up all night working, the only place to sleep is on a hard stone floor!
Thanks for being patient with the political comments, I'm sure it's not always easy!
Dave.

Fantastic image! Congrats on the award!

Story telling composition. It doesn't matter what the words on the wall say. Somehow I think the water bottle, forearm, and rifle lines work well together.

I like your portfolio. Hope to see some more close up portraits there!

Steve Rosenbach Steve Rosenbach   {K:8338} 2/23/2006
Well, it's a great picture in many ways. I like the way that you have all the design elements - the large Arabic script, the column of smaller script, the soldier, and the rifle - at the edges of the image, sort of making a frame. It's unusual, but very effective.

Also, as you can see from the various comments, your photo evokes a lot of emotion! As for me, there is humor in the common quest of soldiers to find some time for sleep, and serenity in a time and place of conflict.

My heartfelt thanks to you and your comrades for your service to our country!

As to the war itself, the fault lies not with Mr. Bush, but with Mr. Saddam and all others who create and maintain societies of fear.

Nice photo of the day for guys travling miles away from their home to kill people they don't know for reasons they don't have.
You could Dedicate this pic to the souls of more than 100 000 innocent Iraqi killed in the last two years during the Operation "Iraqi Freedom" .
I really hope that one day those soldiers suffer in their own country from the same kind of "freedom" they are teaching to others.
Thanks for the Usefilm for respecting the opinion of the peace lovers on this site, and awarding a picture reflect the killing culture that some people have, even that we have a lot of great photos of love , work, peace , fun, urban life .. in this site.
Or maybe we should look just for the sharpness, the DOF, and the croping … and forget the idea that each photo has.
Maybe one day they will front page a sadic pic taken in the prison of Abu Garib that show american super heros use their sexual illness to play with the bodys of Iraqi people.

Amazing picture, your work is to show to us all a part of the truth that is always are hidden from us.
what is written in the walls is: WE NEED FROM A SCHOOL, To create a generation beleives in ALLAH (GOD), loves his country, beleives in the ARAB unity and its message, its objectives, and its freedom, a generation armed by the knowledge, depends on the work and self-learning, owns a fighting spirit, ready to face all the difficulties, open to the world, cope with ideologies of humanity, live by authinticity and novelty.
Those are no more than words on the wall, maybe a whole nation could live by them someday.
whether what happened was good or bad for them, the spirit who wrote and beleived in those words are capable of making a difference.
thank you for this image

Congrats for the PoD Chuck! Very well deserved indeed.

I had a look through your portfolio a little while ago and was very impressed with both composition and your bravery under the circumstances. Not exactly the most convenient place and time to set up, compensate for lighting, get your subjects to pose etc etc... :) I'm sure most times you probably only had a split second to decide how you were going to record the moment. And you did an incredible job. Kudos.

Wouldn't it be nice if they were viewed in the context they were intended - photo-journalism... Oh well, can't be helped. Please don't let provocative comments discourage you from posting more.

Take care.

Hi Chuck, and congratulations for the DoD award. People like us who sleep safely at home and have the time to admire a flower and a bee don't know what it's like for you.
I sincerely admire you and think you're a great photographer, I'm impressed that you even are willing to share with us these images, and I have to say "my hat off to you" - it's a photo site and I feel you bring something very different, valuable and real to it. Your day is very different than ours, none of us risks our lives, and I wish you well, and stay safe, wherever you are. Best regards, Ina

a classic military photo. soldiers do love to sleep, anywhere and anytime.

actually, contrary to the first poster's comment, its a bigger crime as a soldier to lean your weapon up against a wall like that (falling and hitting the ground could lead to accidental discharge) rather than having it lay near your feet :>) however, in this context, having it against the wall is more aesthetic-looking.

best wishes ~ james

Chuck, I think that this composition is brilliant. It turned my stomach to view this image because of the weapon stood still at the soldiers feet while he sleeps, looking up at the arabic writing on the wall.

I wish you well in such difficult times.

Chuck... you are doing an excellent job as a photographer.
I really wish you didn't have to be in Irak, that the war never happened. Still, you and your camera can do your bid to bring light into darkness.
I think it would be great if you tried to reflect not only the combact but the feelings, the emotions of that moment, to reflect what goes through the mind of both your fellow soldiers as well as the iraqi population.
If you do that your portfolio will reached new heights.
Stay safe.

Fabio,

Please remember this is suppose to be a photographic forum, not a political one. I know my photos do have a political nature to them - but I'm a U.S. Army Combat Cameraman, so a lot of my images will be military in nature. I joined this site to share my photos and learn what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong as a photographer - so please be respectful. Thank!

What can I say, but hummmm...you have some very good points. However, you can still see very well with these glass - I should know, I have a pair. In fact you can even wear them at night with the yellow filters in them. The weapon - that one I have to agree with you, but in his defense he was in a secure area. I hope that answer some of your questions.

'how many babies did you burn today, sir?'
I'd like to know what the arab letters say and where's bin laden's hiding (and why still alive & kicking) and how you'll tell your children you waged a war just for the sake of mr.bush' employers in big oil?...zzzz
(maybe he is dreaming about this problems, but I fear he's not even dreaming)

I like this image is very nice and peaceful when nobody killing anybody.
If I was his superior I punish him by not paying for a month salary. The reason is he made two mistakes:
1) to sleep with sun glasses which could not see the day light
2) he put his rifle near to his feet rather than near to his hands or arms in case in emergency situation need to use it
