Driving home from work late last summer and saw this scene from the B.U. bridge. About 15 minutes after sunset, facing East. Had to time the shot between planes taking off from Logan airport and boats coming down the river. The original is much more sharp, so clearly I need to work on my scanning skills...What about the lights from the boat in the bottom right, should I clone them out?
First let me tell you I pick up your picture to my favourites,Then I quote 7/7. Now after stating I love your night shot, I just don?t understand the very underated quotes you got. This is picture in the 6/7 range, not at all in the 5. Regards jorge
Hey, my favorite town! (Lived in Boston all my life.) ;-)
I'm on the fence about the boat - if you didn't tell me what it was, I may not have paid it much attention - at this size. However, as a print it might be distracting.
I wonder, have you tried cropping the bottom of the photo - just where the wake begins? That way you could make a nice-looking panorama photo. Mind you, you'd be telling a different 'story' than your original, but it might be interesting to see how it'd come out. If you like that idea, but think the crop's too severe, you can always crop it a little lower and clone out only some of the wake. Just my wheels turning.
Chris, the panoramic look works for sure. It looks like you used a fancy x-pan or something, even though you really used a rebel G and 28-80 lens. I like viewing photos taken with consumer equipment (I'm not being mean)like mine, that look professional like yours. It shows that technique and a good eye are the key ingredients, not all the specs of the camera. Again well done.
Thanks for all of the comments. Andrew, to answer your question: there was more on the top AND the bottom originally, since I had to shoot this at a fairly wide angle. While I really like the vastness of the blue, there was just too much. I also thought it was better with more of panoramic look.
Chris, I like this photo. The blue night colour is splendid and although there is a lot of sky there it adds to the vastness and gives a feeling of space. How did you crop this? Was there more on top or bottom initially? Well done, especially for on go effort! That's what photography is all about. Have your camera around and be opportunistic and it eventually pays off.
