This is an old one, I haven't visited the site in ages.
I'm afraid we will have to agree to not agree. I sorry but I can not see a lighthouse.
The horizon line is the line where the water meets the sky. I see it as very near the mid point of the shot.
While there are some warm soft glows in the image for me the glaring hot sun unfortunately dominates.
Thanks for reminding me of Usefilm, I think I may post again.

First off Joe, Thank you for your comment. I do not know how I missed it but I did.
While I respect your opinion on how oyu would have taken the shot. I have to disagree with you.
I Captured exactly what I was going for with this shot. I wanted the warm soft glows of the sun and the siloutte of the light house.
If you notice the top part of the picture which is truely the horizon line is in the upper third of the shot and leading the eye down and through the shot.

this is a very nice image. the composition cannot be better for this time of the day where highlights seem to really play a good part on that matter. another thing i notice and that i find it great is the fact that the two shadows of the pols on the left (in the foreground of composition) do not mingle with the polls on right, thus contributing to a nice melody of highlight and shadows winding deep into the centre ~
a really lovely image Sam, cheers, v.

Great stitch job resulting in a very nice composition. The clouds are wonderful - but have to agree with Mary - IMHO the blue in the sky's color is a little too intense - almost a royal blue and some navy on my screen - as is the sharp contrast between the light and dark areas of the clouds. Will admit that the coloring does make the whole shot a little surreal.

It is such a glorious scene. The majesty of such locations must be awe inspiring. Your stitching is flawless. The only thing I find is the clouds ans sky seem to be brought out a bit too much. MAry

Thanks for the comment Mary!!!
This shot was taken for 876 seconds or 14.6 minutes. Yes those were planes flying though the shot. the lights are from the city of Phoenix which is about 100 miles away from Prescott, Az where this shot was taken. Sam

Star trail pictures are a favoutite of mine. I wish I had a camera that allowed me to try such a shot. Your composition is effective with the hill to the side, leaving the landscape along the bottom, and having the stars curve over the hill. Very pretty. How long was your exposure? Were those planes passing by while your shot was being taken? MAry

I thought I could not get the other one open until I saw Jan's note. As she said, it is way over to the right. Of the two, I light this one better. It is much more dramatic. The plain white top emphasizes that glorious cube more than the other one and definately makes this more eye catching. It is remarkable work. As I have no idea how you did this, I don't know what is possible and not. I think an interesting variation would be to have the bottom part more roundish with uneven edges as a puddle would be. The contrasting square and round elements would be intriguing. This is superb work. MAry

Georgous shot Sam- and I like how you've cropped the sky so low- the clouds are outstanding , the textures, and tones..both rich - and the stitching really perfection to me - I like to view the entire 'Bend' to the Falls ... I find this truely a pleasure to view !!!
Best Regards, Michele~
PS I don't understand when You get hundreds of views and only 5-6 comments - whats wrong with this site anyway ? It doesn't make any sence ....I am getting frustrated here too --

Aloha Sam,
A very descent image for sure with a current view count of 948, 23 Comments, no favorites, and an overall rating score of only 5.62, so let's deal with the latter ... Okay?
1. The 'large' rock at the bottom left corner needs to be dealt with because it is indeed 'large' and out of focus ... Right?
2. Therefore a crop was in order to also eliminate the graying colour running along the south border in the water along with alot of vignetting in ALL four corners, but which is probably Sigma's fault and this lense was indeed written up for that so why did you purchase it?
3. The waterline at the left 'Rule of Thirds' is what really catches my eye and the reflection there has excellent clarity.
4. To summarize with a few additional comments I have cropped, clarified, cleaned, and enhanced with my 'Signature Frame' :)) now 'Ready For Hanging' ...
What do you think per the attached if you don't mind of course?
Thanks for sharing and Best of Regards!
P.S. If you ever need a tutorial or any assistance whatsoever then please do not hesitate to ask because that is what we are all here for ... Right?

Joe, First off....thank you very much for the time you took to comment on my work. I couldn't agree with you more. I wasn't sure about the bg and you have confirmed my thoughts on it. On my computer the shot looks over sharp....but when I got on my work monitor it looks awesome. I think it's time for me to invest into a new Mac cinema display monitor.
Anyhow....thank you for your version. I Love what you did.

Very good shot Sam. I like the light and exposure, the pose and composition. I am impressed you could get this close with only 70mm. My only nit-pics, the dark shadow area in the background to the upper right of the bird is a bit distracting and I feel the image would look better if the bg was constant across the image. And I feel the focus on the bird's head is not as sharp or crisp as it could be. Here's my version with the shadow removed and a little smart sharpening applied in CS3. What do you think? Regards, Joe

Hi Joe: I hope that you are having a fantstic weekend. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts on my work. I never gave much thought to cropping this image the way you mentioned. I got home last night and I have to tell you that you are RIGHT. It make what I was trying to convay come across a lot better. I have really love learning. getting someelse honest opinion on what they think might make a shot more dramtic and have more impact is AWESOME!! thought people won't always agree because it is so subjective. But this really renews a feeling I haven't had on this site for a long while.

This shot has a lot going for it. The perspective is very nice, you caught wave action moving toward the viewer coming down the pier, excellent. The light is nice giving some great diagonal shadows working both directions. Colour of the sand with the blue and greens of the water is great. Not crazy about the central placement of the horizon and the vanishing point. I would crop the top part of the image moving the horizon to near the upper third of the image. Just scroll the image up so that you can only see the bottom two thirds of the image to see what I mean. It even increases the dynamic impact of the wave coming toward you. Best regards, Joe

Hi Joe:
Thank you for your comments. I am really thankfull you gave your honest opinion of this shot. I agree with you about the greenish cast. I didn't notice it until after I already uploaded it and recieved comments.
I had to giggle about the starving artist comment. Kim and I bought this painting along with 2 others outside of a movie theater while waiting for our movie to start.
You know. I really wish this site would go back to the way it was. everyone really got more out of it. To me, if you can not take an honest critique, then you shouldn't be submitting your work to a site that was designed for just such a thing. If you ever critique any of my work and I don't understand how to fix what you are talk about, I hope that you wouldn't mind if I picked your brain to find a way to accomplish what you were talking about.
I am really glad you took the time to comment on my work and will be making my way over to your portfolio and seeing what I can see.
Kind Regards
Sam III
