Marlene,
Its good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words. Its one of my favorite photos, too. I'm about to hang it in my new home. I'll email you with more info.

Mark,
As I looked through all of your images, I kept returning to this face. She expresses such joy. Her eyes say it all. The angle and background make it look like she is almost floating. Beautiful.

Hope you're doing well.

now I see. I'm not familiar with that technique myself. I sometimes find overexposed areas of photos hard to look at... well, when learning anything new it takes time.

as for Guangxi, never been to the rice terraces in winter time, so they will definitely look different. And I'll be there during Chinese New Year, so I'm just hoping the crowds are not as massive as they are everywhere else in China at that time. That can turn a peaceful and tranquil place into a madhouse.

With respect to the HDR photography, I've decided to continue with it, but in daylight conditions with easier subjects. that should make it somewhat easier and hopefully more productive.

I did manage some nice photos of the Bank of China building again, and discovered that they have an observation deck on the 42nd floor there. Unfortnately I discovered that after returning to Shenzhen last night.

This was an ill fated attempt of mine ... I had seen the work of a photographer who took street / city scenes, and made them look even more interesting by increasing the contrast in a way that created stark and harsh lighting to the point of washing out sections of the image. Not well executed on my part, however. Thanks for looking, and commenting.

Hi Mark. You probably noticed already but the glare off the sidewalk is a bit much. Hard to fix that type of problem but worth a try. Maybe a curves adjustment?

Hi Mark. I think this is a candidate for an award in the project you entered it in. Nicely executed.

hi mark. i missed this one previously.

you're right in that mao isnt talked about much these days, and capitalism/free enterprise have really taken hold in china now. in fact, its not often one will see an image of mao in many places, at least i havent noticed it anywhere recently.

tong li is outside of suzhou, and near shanghai if i'm not mistaken? i've never been there myself and didnt know they still used pedicabs up there.

its a good image overall.

This photo reminds me of one of the things I really dislike - the constant drone of advertising we're bombarded with day after day everywhere you look. I hate ads! I see them here in China as well, and still have to tune them out. Of course, I rarely watch TV over here....

Best wishes ~ James

interesting shot here mark. the way you described it is precisely the way I would describe most desert shots at low light.

On a related note, as Death Valley has the lowest elevation in the western hemisphere, I should mention I passed through the Tarim Basin in western China, which has the second lowest elevation in the world - approx. 154m.

Best wishes ~ James

James,
On the right side of image is in fact a giant door. It seems to me the door itself was about 12 feet tall, and there was another 5 or 6 feet above it of stationary glass. Quite weird and quite interesting.
I hope all is well with you my friend. Best regards,
Mark

Todd, I'll try to get some of those photos posted over the next few days. Japan was great ... my photos were not so great. I'll see what I can dig up for you. I'm sure you'll have a blast. Where will you be going? I spent most of my time in Kyoto.
Can we still get together in MN for a day of street photography before you move? What might work for you schedule wise?

Checking out some of your images Mark, you sure do get around. Very nice capture. I like the hand in the air, the arched window framing the shot, the texture on the window and the overall composition of the piece. Excellent job.

This is very nice, I like the pattern created by the frost and curved mirror, the colours are great, not sure what it is about the colours, word purity comes mind. Good eye, execellent image.

Hi Mark, I haven't been around for a while. Great to see your latest work! This one is brilliant, great sequence and excellent setting to catch the pedestrians! The red square is great in the corner and the concrete wall is beautiful, like an abstract painting. Even the half-and-half light & shade works great for bringing out the patterns. Best regards, Ina
