Thanks JD. It is a lot of work to set up a website from scratch, but I think it is ultimately more satisfying than using an automated or off-the-shelf design.

As far as this photograph is concerned, it is not really intended as high "art". I see it more as a humourous street scene. But it's a very busy scene, making it hard to get the cool policeman to stand out against everything else that's going on (including those buses on the flyovers!) I think the HDR helps this, adding a hint of comic-book drawing to it.

At the end of the day, this was a grab shot that turned out rather grey and dismal. HDR brought it to life. That's the view from my side, but as always your views are much appreciated and are a great help.

Wow, today on UF we had a visit from the Admin and the great DDC! (Is there any connection... snigger, snigger!)

I was in NYC in November but I'm now back in Yurp, sitting out the economic blip. Gives me lots of time to learn new things. I'm still experimenting with this HDR stuff but it is surprising how much detail it can extract from even a single RAW image.

Thanks for dropping by,
AJ

A wild and imaginative photo - that's an angry industrial background you've chosen! Though the sunset is beautiful, it is made to look toxic by the skyline.

Ah Riny, I see there's nothing of yours to comment on at present, but I love the gesture in your bio-pic.

Fabulous colours and diagonal composition. It must be very inconvenient having to drag this around all day.

Excellent atmosphere. The skipping girl stands out beautifully against the background. The horse wandering into the image adds a lovely touch of incongruity.

An interesting contrast of shapes and textures. And is it not strange that the ripples would be very similar if water replaced the sand...

Thanks Keith. I didn't know a thing about HDR when I took this last November. I've managed to get this detail out of a single exposure, and wonder how much better it would be if I had taken 3 or 5 bracketed exposures.

BTW, the flights were cheap - it was the accommodation that was the killer!

PS. Sorry the UF meet-up in Warsaw hasn't happened yet - I'm in town but a bit swamped by admin things.

There's a powerful ambiance in this image - great to see it on the front page today, both because it's an excellent photo and because it's about time there was some fresh material awarded. Congratulations!

Amazing! A new pic gets a new award! And what a picture it is - a lovely scene, but where much of the image has been turned into something abstract, a study of colours and textures. Excellent creative use of HDR.

Well done, Paul, and let's hope this heralds a revitalised UF...

The eye sees a forlorn figure being led by the rickety track to his village. Then something happens, and the track does not lead to the village after all, but veers off elsewhere...

What an amazing looking place. You've captured the harshness of the landscape and the way the inhabitants are doing their best to survive in this environment. Would be interesting to see a shot from the same location today...

This is a wonderful industrial image. It's almost like an assembly of blocks, triangles and circles. This is enhanced by the saturated colours. I like the way the different elements are different colours - the green ship, the blue derrick, the orange silos... The wooden jetty and bollard in the foreground give a sense of perspective.

When I started experimenting with HDR, I hadn't realised that it could be used in various ways to create different effects. This image is one where the HDR is more obvious and I think it is superb - but I have also come to realise pretty fast that there are some who really dislike this style!

Again, I spotted a hint of HDR before seeing the categories. Nice job on the tones, and this one is definitely not oversharpened! ;)

(How would you feel about losing those wires?)

Everyone seems to be getting into HDR at present, Mark, me included... I like this for the subtle application of the technique. It seems to bring out the tones and details without being oversaturated or oversharpened.
