great use of DOF .... I think it might be a little more interesting composition wise if the 2 elements in the image were more on a diagonal rather then evenly horizontal

what a fantastic color you are getting in the monsoon time. I imagine it has to do with the humidity to some degree.

These desert plains extend north all the way into Canada where many dinosaur remains are being found every spring when the winters melt erodes yet another layer of reddish silt.
The mood of the sky really creates the dramatic effect bringing out the power of this type of landscape

Hi Dennis,
This is a common type of landscape here in Canada for the moment, although this image was taken at the perfect time of the day to bring out the best of what was there. And yes it stands out as some of the natural beauty of our planet that at some point in the near future will likely change for the worst....A floating Mc Donalds on the shore??? pop cans floating near the surface? or just damn it up and have a huge power station sucking the energy from the dynamic hydraulic flow down stream.....ahhh yes we humans have the creative capacity to "improve" the landscape to our short term benefit. I am a cynic no doubt.... although I can rejoice in what we still have...

I was a lighthouse keeper on Malcolm Island across the way for a few years. then living on the other end as a token hippy for another few years. Now that i am bald it is hard to maintain the hippy image.....haha...

Hi Manu,

Thanks for your comment. AS to the D300 it is much more of a camera then my previous bodies, with far more variables and setting to deal with to garner a reasonable image. It has been a much longer learning curve to achieve what I want as a image because of this. A lot of experimentation has to happen to see how the camera will act. Anyway if you don't mind fooling with it for a while it does help create some amazing images.

Always good to see a different perspective on Yellowstone Park, the biggest Volcano in the world. I understand the Caldera is rising steadily and areas heating up. A little scary...but intriguing too.

Hi Roger,
I think you will find it a good camera body but with a few faults like most of them....but I imagine it will be a fair upgrade from the D200....I know about the resale prices falling faster then stone to earth. I did manage to sell one of my D80s and am keeping the other as a back up. It is nice to have the second body with a different lens so as not to have to switch lens all the time. The Anti dust feature is a huge plus.

Hi James,
Yes there are lots of wildlife here wandering around the back 40...moose, bears, coyotes, foxes, herds of Buffalo and Elk....hard to name them all.....we see them every day.
I am living in Black Diamond south of Calgary. A small town with a funny eccentric feel, My kind of place.

Another pess-off is that Adobe has not created a RAW profile for any of the previous versions of Photoshop. so you will need PS3 to view Raw in Photoshop or convert to Tiff or Jpeg in the Nikon software provided first, what a pain. One good thing is the anti dust feature which is a late feature for Nikon but works great. I have yet to see dust on any images yet, despite changing lens often. Anyway this D300 body is new to me still, so the jury is still out for me. Although I have to say that even though there are some things that could be improved it is a big step up from previous models with some good new features.

Hi Roger,
Good to see some of your new posts from a land beyond my comprehension and experience.
You were asking about the D300. I have to say that one I have not used a D200, so I can't compare. But I have to say that the D300 has a much wider dynamic range then the D80 without having to use the "Active D" feature. That being the in camera software allowing darker areas much more detail. The Active D works well and really allows for full details in normally difficult lighting situations where I might normally use a ND filter to compensate for extremes in tonal contrast. The one reason I don't like it though, is that I find the colors become dull and grayed when it is on. So after having shot a lot of images I am inclined not to use it. The other frustrating thing is that in order to turn it on or off every time, you have to go into the menu to do so. There isn't a button allocated for this feature. A big mistake on Nikon's part I think, for such a touted new and important feature. I am not such a techie kind of guy, so the menu on this new body is quite daunting to delve into, with so many variables to absorb that it is taking much longer to figure out all the potential permutations and image possibilities and that even after shooting over 10,000 images so far I am not sure how much better this camera is really. What I can say is, that the details this camera captures is much better then previous camera bodies. The color rendering in my opinion seems inconsistent. As in, just how any one particular lighting situation is interpreted by this body is odd sometimes and i have not necessarily been able to predict the end result quite like i could with the D80 or D70. One thing I can say is that you will need a big Hard drive to deal with saving the much bigger image sizes. I am using a 8 gig card to shoot with and once it is full, it sucks a whole 8 gigs, wow...

I do all of the above to get in but am using the simplest thing first...driving as close as possible with a good GPS that has the local topo maps. That way I can see interesting areas that I can't see, like ponds and meadows and such. I wear these over boots called "NEOs" that are like nylon rubber boots that go to your knees so that i can walk across streams and bogs and not to worry. They fit right over my running shoes or hiking boots. Also they are good for getting in and out of boats. Inside my van I have a inflatable Kayak to get into places for that unique water level view. It takes 3 min to inflate and is good in the ocean. I have a dbl. inflatable kayak too for gear or second person. All in all the best thing i own for all this is the NEOS....i highly recommend them, I just leave them in the car and go to wet places whenever i see them and don't need special boots. here is a link:

I ordered mine from this place in Maine:

Hope this covers some of your questions Kes.

I have to say the light balancing in the dark has more to do with the D300, It is amazing for extreme light conditions.
