Drew ,here the composition is not bad, But the problem is with the light. Harsh midday sun is hard to deal with. The nose is overexposed around the mouth area. The shadow of the horn on the neck is distracting also. I don't mean to bust on your photo I just want to help you take better pictures. When you look through the view finder you need to see in you mind what the camera is going to see, and you have to realize that the camera and film don't have the same ability as you and I to see and capture light . Your eye sees a range of tones that covers about 11 stops in camera terms, from bright highlights to the detail in dark shadows. Where as the camera and film can only capture about 5 stops. When lighting is very harsh like at midday something has got to give. This picture would have been better if the animal was in the shade or if it were taken in the golden light of late afternoon. There is a very good book called Perfect Exposure by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz that might help if you are interested it is very good on learning exposure.

We call that "The Happy Accident" in the land of potters.
Like when one glaze drips onto another and you come out with something amazing.

Bravo!

Nice motif you found. Beautiful though slightly oversaturated colors and too hard light. Can be helped in PS (Duplicate Layer, Layers plaette multyply, slide ruler opacity) to some extent, though some pretty blown out areas here. You may have to overpaint them. Regards Jorg

Welcome to both of you to usefilm! Well, right off you get my respect since you also use a Nikon (mine is the older N60), and then that you are enjoying photography TOGETHER (that is for my otherhalf to read and maybe take a hint from ;D )...stunning clouds and yes, the bottom is too dark, but unless you have an edit program, it is what it is and as it was when you captured the beauty........keep em coming! -Gayle in WA state

Well, well...well...wel-come to USefilm, folks! And nice on ya got here. Did I read that right? Wisconsin? My neighbors to the north. I posted some photos of a trip MM and I took to a friend's cabin in Tomahawk. Very nice country you have there. Keep the good shots coming.

A tough subject to shoot... i have tried (take a look if you have time)

The lighting could be better both through the glass and on this side... maybe just a little fill flash to see some highlights
