Well thank you, kind sir. Nice to see you back on UF. Yeah - it just sort of appeared on day. The project is a bit older, so the award notice doesn't show up on the UF home page.

LOLOL.... Ah, my secret identity has slipped out, finally, after all these years. My first name is Jon, but I usually go by "Jeff", which is my middle name. Except for on UF, where I adopted Jon as nom de plume, as it were.

The dark sky and sea balance each other beautifully. This is exquisite.

I like it, but I think it be a stronger image without any people in it.

Cheers,

Jon

I'm not normally a huge fan of flower shots, but I find this very out of the ordinary and quite interesting. The colours contrast well against each other and the background, and the asymmetric composition help to push it above the ordinary. This would work well as a card, with captioning in the empty space on the left side, and the softness of it lending itself to printing on fibre paper of some sort. Anyway... I quite like it.

Cheers,

Jon

Very nice - excellent use of DOF and the high-key, hazy effect along with the water droplets work together to make a very attractive composition. Tranquil and quiet. I see that the background is a bit noisy - is this a tight crop of a larger image? Or a high ISO?

The Easter connection totally escaped me...! But yes. And thanks for all the kind comments.

Cheers,

Jeff

(PS: 9-year old down the street spilled the beans about the whole Santa/Easter Bunny thing to my 6 year old this weekend... grrrrr.... )

Good shot. The "about" makes the image, proving once again that a picture is not, in fact, worth a thousand words, excepting if it has a caption :-]

For the record: Not a Nirvana fan, but sorry to see a young life ended that way. Also, too bad about the house. It's unlikely that what is there now is anything like as interesting. If it's like Vancouver, they built a large pink stucco monstrosity in its place.

Saskatoon - "the Paris of the Prairies", as I have heard it referred to (I think in a Tragically Hip song; I once spent a bit of time trying to track down the reference, with ambiguous results).

As the Medicine Hat sank, a large group gathered on the bank and on the Traffic Bridge to watch. At the height of the festivities, a couple of cowboys tried to drive a herd of cattle across the crowded bridge, with predictable results. People afterward agreed that it was the most entertainment they'd had in weeks.

Pretty similar climate and terrain here to many places in Russia, I'm sure. It was actually a fairly bright day, so I shot it a bit dark and then played with the contrasts to get some more mood into the piece.

Cheers,

Jon

LOL... very nice. Funny shot of a lovely child. A little more diffuse light coming from farther to the side might give softer shadows and a bit more modelling to the face, which to me seems to be somewhat flattened by what I assume to be the on-camera flash.

Alas, in our case the Teeth of Winter (and wouldn't that be a good name for heavy metal band?) are only releasing us so as to get a better grip. Sigh...

Ahh! Very good - it took a minute for that one to resolve itself into something recognizable. An excellent set of reflections. Very complex, lots of different layers to push past, and, I think, well suited to black and white, which makes each element the same weight, thus forcing us to try and see them all at the same time. I see that the lines of the building on the other side of the street break the image into thirds. Deliberate? Well done in any case - very enjoyable.

Jon

Thanks, Andre. You'll never know until you try! I do sometimes wonder to what purpose I take all these photographs for, so it's nice to have some that actually have a reason for existing :-]

Thanks, Andre. I wanted to get the face much clearer than this.It would have been far easier to do two images then combined them afterward, but I had challenged myself to do it in one shot. I do like the "peeking around the corner" effect, however.

Great mood here. I would have said that the foreground is suffering from over-sharpening except that I know you don't do that sort of thing... it must just be the shadows of those reeds. Or you've really got that hyperfocal distance thing down pat!

I believe it is the space between the front of the line of cars and the edge of the frame that makes this image seem more three dimensional than the last one (with the curving track).

Interesting...

This is the best of the three, imho. I think given the time of year, you could get away without the selective desaturation and still have the strong contrast of train vs background. Lots of depth, thanks to the converging parallel lines and the DOF, plus good framing on the left to keep everything focussed. Strangely, I find the pathway crossing from left to right to be a very strong element - my eye started there, then moved to the train, then followed the line all the way out the back.

Thanks, Andre. That seems to be happening already... :-[ ... but he gets more interesting all the time, so I guess I'll just enjoy it as it comes.

He was sitting at the computer desk looking up at me. Unfortunately, there's a piece of paper down there that detracts from the image, I think. I burned it in (see attached).

Jeff

Nice scene... I didn't think you got snow in that part of the world. This looks underexposed to me - is this deliberate?
