No-one is really sure about the reason for the lip-plate, but all Mursi women over a certain age wear it - it does not signify leadership. The most popular theory is that it developed during times of slave-raiding to make the women less attractive to the slavers.

Thank you both for your comments, which are very helpful. A revised version is now up...

Thanks for your comments. I was going to crop the tree, but it placed the wall under the dome a little too close to the edge for my liking. I might play with it again later...
Regards, Rob

What do you think is wrong with the sun? I agree with the time point - a 10 day holiday is never enough!

Thanks for your comments. As for HDR, I have used this method before, but like you say, you need a tripod. This shot, and the other one, were shot at f4.0 handheld at iso 800, so could not use it here...

i think that you are right about the darkness, and I also agree with the tighter crop, but i think you lose the 'line' taking our eye through the picture on too tight a crop. i'm going to have another go at this one..

Many thanks for all your comments.

The lens used is a Canon 24-85 (holding out for my 24-105L...) I spent a lot of time trying to get the bottom step horizontal but it threw out the centre vertical so I left it as is. I have corrected the perspective in photoshop, so this may have caused it, but I suspect it may also be to do with a less-than-perfect lens...grateful for any tips on how to correct it!

It is looking at Tottenham Court Road, from behind Harmony (hence the nurse...)

This is outside a hindu temple (no shoes inside) in Colombo. She looks after the shoes for a small tip (there is another lady next to her doing the same). Sadly this is the way of life there (and in many other places) regardless of natural disasters...

Not a crop, but taken at the same time. May even be the same animal...

You are (sort of) right on the flash. I used an 550ex pointing straight up with the funny little bit of plastic sticking out which causes the catchlights in the eyes. The lighting does make it tricky - I tend to go with the flow and try to fix whatever I can in photoshop. This was is dark on my work PC, looks OK on my one at home and in a print though..

I like the blacks here. This looks like the most personal shot from your portofolio, Paolo, and also the best (in my view). Pity that the top left is washed out, but it really isn't so important...

Christopher, Have to confer with Ferran. This is my favorite of your portfolio, but a little more detail to let us see in the stairway would be perfect. That said, I often find usefilm is a little darker than my prints - maybe you are finding the same. I might also chop off the roads and leaves at the very top to emphasie the geometry of the shot.

Thanks Chris, I wanted to chop the bottom, but then I'd miss the hand. Was stuck in a land rover, so difficult to choose an alternative! The best bit (that you can't see on usefilm, but can on a print) is the phase on the beer box "A beer balanced to perfection"!

I'm always scared to take photos of well-known and over-photographed places - it is difficult to get a unique shot but you have managed that here - well done. The composition and use of the polariser is spot on. However (and please take this in the manner with which it is intended) - there is somehting about the photo (maybe the processing) that is not right - the tower looks somewhat strange (apart from the foreground) and there is a pale halo in the sky around the tower (oversharpening maybe?). Otherwise excellent.

Sorry, Khaled - this one was not me (though I think I have been in that exact position...)

These photos from Egypt all come from last December / January...

Mohamed, your comments are much appreciated, thank you. Apologies for not commenting on your portoflio, but right now i prefer to post rather than to comment - for the record i have enjoyed your portfolio also (which has improved with almost every shot...)

These are chalk formations in the 'White Desert' (part of the Western Desert, or Sahara) in Egypt. They are pretty big, and very surreal structures...
