hi mike, i think yoiu could up the contrast and lower the brightness a bit on this one and it would render the black and whites a bit nicer.

best wishes. james

hi mark, long time no see.

i've been to yangshuo and the li river several times and can attest to cloudy and rainy weather in summer. thats normal tho.

nice shot, and you did well to get this the way you did despite less than ideal conditions.

best wishes. james

nicely done. hard to do airport shots these days since everything is a security risk not it seems.

interesting concept here jose. i hadnt noticed it was edmonton. most of my canada days have been spent in ottawa or elsewhere in ontario. i think you should crop the trees branches out and post it again tho. best wishes. james

interesting angle. you must have gotten real close for this one. most people in asia are frightened if you get real close to them with a wide angle for a decent portrait. hence my decision to buy the 70-300mm.

birds are beautiful arent they. is this a "bluejay" or a "bluebird" and is there any difference? i like this shot but i think again you could saturate the colours alison. i havent tried bird photos yet, but may someday. i saw some vultures in west sichuan a few days ago, but just couldnt focus on them quickly enough to make it worthwhile. thats a whole other area of photography.

finally, how did you enlarge this photo?

hi alison. i've been away from UF for a few months, so its good to see you have more nice photos and a new camera. i also just bought a 70-300mm lens and once i saw this shot i suspected by the DoF it was taken with a long lens. as noted, nice DOF here, but i think you should have tried to up the yellow saturation a little, and it would be much brighter.

a good shot but as karina says, it would be great to know what the sign is saying. is the message relevant to the woman at all?

philip, one thing that would have improved this photo now that i look back on it is if the two people directly behind the horse werent there. the legs of the horse would be more clearly defined, but those are decisions i need to make earlier and faster. as for shutter speed and so on, its just something i have to work on. may go out and shoot photos of moving taxis here in chengdu later today.

terry, canada certainly does have advantages that most other countries dont have. but that doesnt mean one cant live comfortably in another place or society. china is a developing country and has many problems still but its possible to have a life similar to that back home, its just that most people who've not been to china dont realize thats possible. but many people are afraid of the unknown, and china and other faraway countries are still the unknown to many out there. as far as photography is concerned, china is like a gold mine that one might have stumbled upon.

so in essence, i agree with you.

absolutely outstanding photo. this is one of the places i want to see next. however, its a bit far from where i am now so will have to wait. this is the quintessential photo of namibia.

its a great documentary photo philip. a shame you didnt get all three of the ladies in a bit tighter but thats the way it is sometimes when we look back on some missed chances. still, you managed to convey an interesting part of the daily life of these namibians.

regarding the comment by our photographic colleague kambiz, i think its safe to say that if the woman didnt want her photo taken, that would have been made clear by the individual concerned at the outset. in cases like this, these people are usually pleased to be the subject of a photo.

good to see others that are interested in the lives of those living in different societies.

warmest regards ~ james

terry.... i live and work in china. i'm free for the summer and various other parts of the year as well. so i have plenty of opportunit to travel, and do most of it here in china, altho i do go to other places when i have the time and money.

regarding breathing at higher altitudes, you can always feel that you're high up, climbing stairs, or some other routine task reminds you of it constantly. altitude sickness took over me for a couple of days two weeks ago, headache, body aches, nausea, but after that (and some medication) i felt ok.

the views and the simplicity of life up there makes it all worthwhile in my opinion. no crowds, no pollution and lots of freedom to go wherever you want to do whatever you want.

i lived in alberta for a few years as a teenager but i've only been to the rockies once and even then it was just driving thru. so i'm making up for it now.

hi terry. breathing up here isnt too hard, altho you do need to pace yourself when you first arrive. at times, you can even find yourself gasping for breath while sleeping at night. altitude sickness does hit some however, including me at one point earlier in my trip.

i should mention that there are lots of cyclists who ride from chengdu and places further and arrive in western sichuan in that way. riding up from sea level to almost 5000m cant be easy but its something i want to try next year. travelling by bicycle also allows one to stop at any time to do some photography, an opportunity i didnt have this year as i was travelling by bus.

excellent symmetry here. impressive since you had to do it while on the move more or less. true sign of a real photographer, one that sees an opportunity and seizes it.

this scene is all too familiar to me, having grown up in canada. we often had snowfalls such as this and sometimes even more snow.

wish i had some of that snow now.... its about 36C here in chengdu right now.

another nice shot carlen, but in my opinion, its better to get an angle on the bird that reveals a more frontal view. harder to do but possible. sometimes it requires lots of patience.

hi carlen. good shot. would be even better had you been able to a. get closer or b. had a camera that allowed you to zoom in closer. i think the birds just take up too little of the photo and need to be larger. i would have also tried to keep that structure out of the back right and that little bit that looks like a telephone pole in the centre.

awesome shot of this bird. at first glance at the thumbnail i thought one bird was piggybacking another. i was recently in western sichuan and out that way you can find lots of vultures flying overhead. they sometimes feast on human remains during sky burials. just thought you might be interested.
