truly beautiful colours here claudia. this is one of the things i miss from home, here in china, at least in south and central china, you simply cant see this in the fall. the area is too tropical or just the wrong kind of vegetation, or it just doesnt get cold enough. nice capture of natures beauty here.
best wishes. james

hi lisa. you're right, there are some pretty bright sources of light in that photo and they can overpower the rest of the image i think. as i noted to hugo and james, i didnt adjust my aperture settings at all last night, only the shutter. so thats probably a big reason for some problems.
as for the bridge, there (hopefully) arent any lighting problems there, and i do look forward to a successful time shooting photos there. you can see a decent photo of the bridge here:

hi james. as i indicated to hugo, i neglected aperture totally last night and was concentrating too much on shutter speed without necessary adjustments to aperture (had the camera on manual). will give it a go again with smaller apertures to see what the results are. will also consider shooting in RAW. incidentally, ISO for my photo was 200.
thanks for the help james.

hi hugo. i had the camera on manual and was focusing too much on shutter speed and totally neglected the aperture values. that's probably a big part of the problem.
as for metering, I used matrix metering which is supposed to take information from various areas of the frame. i thought this might be more useful since there are a variety of light sources throughout the photo. but i could experiment with other metering values.
thanks for the help hugo. always appreciated.

how many different ways are there to shoot mount fuji? quite a few it seems from your portfolio. this one is particularly nice in that the mountain isnt the only point of focus in the frame.
thanks for the exposure of this nice mountain craig. its one place in japan i hope to get to someday soon.

not bad. a few things:
1. a bit bright still behind the youngest of the three and i would have tried to clone out those tree branches behind her head. easily done and aesthetically would be more pleasing without them there.
2. the hand coming out from behind the shoulder of the grandmother,
3. that paper item blocking the hand of the lady on left.
4. the sunglasses are a distraction.
these are all small corrections/preferential changes i would have made, sometimes we dont see them when we shoot the photo tho. otherwise nice and sharp. a good photo.

despite the flaws, still a nice shot. a shame you didnt get the whole tail but thats the way it is when you shoot this type of photo. i usually just keep pumping off the shots (continuous shooting), and one of them will turn out right (not always tho).
nice work. james

good work. i tried the same panning method in sichuan trying to shoot photos of horses racing by. didnt quite work out the way i planned. its not easy to do this panning technique, especially with this lens. too bad there wasnt more of a background to show a more interesting blur. nice shot nonetheless. james

hi tracy. first of all, nice shot here. i love the beach and the turquoise blue waters that some of these places have. in this photo it would be nice to see a bit more of the sky, too closely cropped at the top i think, and maybe (even tho a lot of people dont like to do it) clone out that white blotch at top centre. looks like some kind of structure or something. but detracts from the loveliness of the photo.
take care ~ james

hi. there's a spot just under the bird.... not sure what it is but could be removed with the clone/healing tool in PS. a faster shutter speed would freeze the wings more as well. otherwise great shot.
