you should visit the cappadoccia region of turkey tim to compare these hoodoos (called fairy chimneys there) with the ones there. they're outstanding as well. although the temperature there in summer is quite high.

very nice photo for sure. is there always that little snow out there at this time of year? seems a bit strange to see so little of it, almost looks like the tail end of spring there.

nice capture of a rather strange looking woman. i have a few similar ones in my portfolio from my recent visit to western sichuan province, which is very tibetan.

actually gary, the western media paid a lot of attention to the destruction of these buddhas. it was one of the last things the taliban were able to get away with. a shame such treasures were destroyed with no regard for historical value.

nice photo adele.

i also visited the panda reserve in chengdu this summer. not easy to shoot a good photo of the panda, they dont move too much and dont spend a lot of time outside, and usually a big crowd of people there to take photos also.

nice colour here. too bad it wasnt a bit sunnier outside, i think the colours would be a lot nicer. i was in chengdu this summer but never had a chance to see these pools. its part of jiuzhaigou isnt it?

quite easy to level the horizon henry. in PS, under menu heading of image ---> rotate canvas ---> arbitrary ---> then select the number of degrees cw or ccw.

i didnt see the same tilt in the horizon doyle did tho, but it almost always happens with seascape shots.

i just saw in the forums that you want to do a sunset shot of this place. does the sun actually set in the direction you're looking here?

regarding this photo, not sure what time you took it, but i would guess sometime around noon or mid afternoon when the sun is higher. there isnt a lot of light shining onto the trees, and they really look dark as a result. probably best to retake this photo in early morning when the sun is at a lower angle and more light will be available to show more detail and colour in this photo.

best of luck with the sunset. james

not sure how you got the blue sky, did you paint it in using the software? i had an overexposed sky on one of my photos from the gansu grasslands last year. i was in the same area the day prior and took a similar photo that day, and the sky was blue with nice fluffy clouds. so in the end, i ended up selecting, cutting and pasting the blue sky from one photo and adding it to the other photo (which had better detail on the ground) to make one decent photo. i dont really like doing that, but i didnt have such great luck taking photos in that area so i had to come up with something.

what i'm saying is its sometimes better to just cut and paste a real sky into a photo that needs one, instead of painting one in. the sky you added is fine i think (as i said i dont know how you did it), but it does seem a bit deep in colour, altho with a polarizer on a bright sunny day early in the morning it could pass. just providing an alternative here in case you werent aware.

good work getting rid of those power lines too.

the result is not bad. i would say you could go quite a bit longer to brighten this one up even more. the clouds make this one interesting.

truly beautiful colours here claudia. this is one of the things i miss from home, here in china, at least in south and central china, you simply cant see this in the fall. the area is too tropical or just the wrong kind of vegetation, or it just doesnt get cold enough. nice capture of natures beauty here.

best wishes. james

hi lisa. you're right, there are some pretty bright sources of light in that photo and they can overpower the rest of the image i think. as i noted to hugo and james, i didnt adjust my aperture settings at all last night, only the shutter. so thats probably a big reason for some problems.

as for the bridge, there (hopefully) arent any lighting problems there, and i do look forward to a successful time shooting photos there. you can see a decent photo of the bridge here:

hi james. as i indicated to hugo, i neglected aperture totally last night and was concentrating too much on shutter speed without necessary adjustments to aperture (had the camera on manual). will give it a go again with smaller apertures to see what the results are. will also consider shooting in RAW. incidentally, ISO for my photo was 200.

thanks for the help james.

best wishes. james

hi hugo. i had the camera on manual and was focusing too much on shutter speed and totally neglected the aperture values. that's probably a big part of the problem.

as for metering, I used matrix metering which is supposed to take information from various areas of the frame. i thought this might be more useful since there are a variety of light sources throughout the photo. but i could experiment with other metering values.

thanks for the help hugo. always appreciated.

hi burak. thanks for the help. repositioning the camera is an option. i'll do that next time i visit that area, just for the practice. i will also attempt to bracket the photos next time as well.
