excellent shot tim. i have to ask what you're doing in argentina these days?

should also mention i have a friend here in china, from kazakhstan, who is also a painter. primarily landscapes. i might upload a few photos of his paintings for you to see. his work is a bit similar to yours, landscapes, although different style.

nice shot of what was once a formidable piece of armour. as for a world where everyone would be on the same side, i'd also argue that would require a world where everyone thinks alike and has identical interests. impossible and also undesirable.

very cool. i really think you ought to consider producing a book on fuji photos at some time. no other photographer seems to have been able to capture that mountain in so many different ways.

take care. james

hi mark. as for this photo, i was almost in the rafters, there's a small observation deck in the departures lounge area that lets you get this close to the ceiling in suvarnabhumi airport, but its not terribly easy to find.

i havent moved to thailand, i was only there on holiday for most of the past month. i'm now back in guangdong province and will be here till the summer now, maybe longer, not sure yet.

take care and catch you later. james

nice and colourful shot. i never think to make photos of simply things that are sitting around the house. but then again, i dont own very much so there's not much to shoot in my place.

nice idea though jan. keep up the good work. james

by the way, what's a lensbaby?

very nice macro claudia. personally i would have used a piece of string or a clothespin to get rid of that small twig in front of that flower.....

good work nonetheless..... best wishes from china.

lovely photo. i love remote looking places. no people, no machines, no noise, just peace and quiet. i can find that in china, but i have to travel a long way to do it.

again, beautiful photo. james

Thank you for that explanation Wez... I had a feeling those stories of instant death upon removal of those rings was a bunch of malarkey (sp?).

pinar, before i went to this village i read all kinds of comments by other western travellers that said they felt sorry for these women and that they felt these women were trapped in some kind of zoo, where they were only photographed.

i didnt get that impression. for one thing, most of the women were not just sitting there being photographed, they were selling small trinkets to tourists, they were laughing and joking around with their friends, and they didnt look as if they were starving. in other words, they are little different from any of the other millions of villagers that live around the world, these women only look a little different.

the tourists who said they felt sorry for these women probably felt they were being exploited. but these same tourists looked at these women through tourist eyes, and not the eyes of these women, or other thais. there's the difference.

thanks for the comment. james

sylvia, when taking shots of flowers, bring a smaqll spray bottle of water with you. spray the flower lightly before taking the photo, and get some nice droplets on the flower, makes a nicer photo.

hi sylvia. since this is your first photo (digitally) i'll give you my thoughts.

first i try to find flowers that dont have any obvious imperfections in them, or else try to clone out the little spots that are distractions. some people just prefer to leave things as they are however which is also fine.

try to find flowers like a lily or lotus that have interesting parts inside that you can focus on with the macro function on your camera.

finally, with the insect, i think its always nicer to get the head of an insect instead of their behind.

some of your photos are looking good. with more trial and error you'll become much better.

good luck. james

Hi Mark. I havent moved to thailand, only here on holiday for chinese new year. mainland china is nothing but chaos during the lunar new year holiday so its best to just go out of country for awhile.

i've also been away from UF for awhile, only now posting a few shots that might be interesting.

look forward to your email, and perhaps meeting one day soon.

warmest regards ~ james

pat, i hate traffic as well. bangkok's traffic is legendary though (3 km/h at the worst times). i was once caught in that mess on my way to the airport. i called my travel agent to tell her i might not make my flight and asked her what i should do (with respect to my air ticket). she suggested i tell the taxi driver to drive faster :-(

this river traffic clears up fast.... once noon passes, there's noone out there.

hi ppdix.... must say i'm surprised to see you on this section of UF. a pleasure at any rate.

you're right, apparently the collarbones/shoulders are just pushed down, and the neck only appears longer.

i've also read that in the event of marital infidelity, these women would have the rings removed, and because of the reason you mention above, they would have to lay down for the remainder of thier lives, otherwise they would indeed die.

warmest regards pat ~ james

hi tim. i've only shot about 5500 photos on my D70 in 18 months. certainly not a lot so i imagine it will last a long time. not happy with the night photos i get from it though. my fuji seems to do a lot better in that respect. not sure what the problem is but maybe i just need to practice practice and practice more.

i have not moved back to canada, although i do want to visit home again soon. maybe in the late summer and stay for two or three months to look around, visit my family and take some fall photos in october, then come back to china. i plan a trip to the far west of china, gansu (where i shot those desert photos) and xinjiang, karakul lake area on the border with tadjikistan and kyrgyzstan and so on. and this time shoot all the photos in RAW, since i didnt do that last time. maybe 5-6 weeks out there then home for two months, then back here by mid or end october.

i have a 70-300mm nikkor G lens, and an 18-50mm sigma DC lens, what would you recommend as an "in between those two" lens? i really want something with f2.8, so i need to spend more cash, but not sure what to get. have you any ideas?

take care ~ james
