First impression goes something like "Bird is out of focus, too dark, and the highlights in the background dominate the whole picture"

The point of focus does appear to be in front of the bird, where as traditionally on most animal shots the critical point of focus is the creatures eyes. You also used F1.4, which gives you a tiny depth of field to play with. The bird is in shadow, which doesn't help things, making it appear dull, especially when compared to those bright highlights behind. I think on this particular shot, I would have used a diffused flash to throw some light on the bird, a smaller aperture to get a wider DOF and focussed tight on the eye... maybe waiting until it's head was side on.

I've got a bit of a thing about old farm machinery and film - you've turned me on with this shot! Love the tilt of the wheel and the grain.

Cute- his skin seems to be a little too yellow though. Maybe from flourescent lighting? It could be adjusted in photoshop- still a great set up and cute portrait.

One of my very first attempts at using frames. Your comments are spot on, I hadn't thought about doing those things but when you mention them I can see where they would be s definate improvement. The faded area of the frame should "match" the rest of the photo instead of being a complete different color.

I like the photo, and I like the frame - I think it would look even better if you added a bit of noise to the photo, and then toned the frame using the same colours (but darker) as the picture - so that the two really gel together.
Very nice!

A fine night-shot of this famous landmark, Andrew.
I particularly like the low angle and inclusion of the water.

I think Tower Bridge is so well known you didn't need to capture the whole picture. Great use of light/reflection.
