Hi David! You're right about catching this birds on film, especially without a long lens.
I don't know much about the Sony717, but if it's threaded, I'd recommend a circular polarizing filter for it. It would take the glare off the water.
I like the rest of image. You have delightful lighting on the bird and the tree. Nicely done. Good job.
