John,

That's why I prefer astronomy to astrology... for me it's a good combination--many deep sky objects to observe!

Steven,

Great image. I like the narrow DOF in this one. Puts all the focus where the action is!

Amna,

Since you are using such a short lens (for the moon), you may want to try bracketting your focus. Get your best focus, take a shot, rack your focus in a bit, take another shot, then rack your focus out a bit past the original and take a third. You could take more if you wish, and keep the sharpest image.

Sara,

Staring at a lone light in the darkness, it will appear to be moving, even if it is actually motionless...

Joshua & Cami,

Try opening up the lens a bit, you'll get more stars. A longer exposure will get you longer trails. I guess the image is so grainy because it is underexposed. The first suggestion should help with that. I have some star trails in my portfolio, if you are interested...

Kristina,

This image has such an "Old World" feel to it. It could easily be taken for a photo from another, simpler time.

Adrian,

I like the colors. I would have used more DOF in this type of shot, but the blurred clouds at the top do add some contrast to the ones on the horizon.

Jenny,

Thanks for your comments. With regards to the cool colors, that has a lot to do with my film choice, as Provia has a reputation for cooling a scene. I have a number of color correcting filters, but do not have a color temperature meter yet. And sometimes I'm not happy with the results of Photoshop's Auto Color function.

Richard, (and Jim),

Though the stars are affected by the Doppler effect, the colors have more to do with the star's temperature and stage of evolution. See http://www.mira.org/fts0/stars/114/txt001w.htm for an explanation.

Kristina,

It's amazing how nature reuses the same basic shapes, but keeps coming up with something unique and fresh... And the image suggests that someting emerges from a broken heart!

Nice macro work.

Alyazia,

Nice work for such a short focal length. Of course a longer lens and a tripod would yield more detail, that's not the main concern when capturing the eclipse.

When shooting the moon, nothing beats focal length. Second, a tripod helps steady the image. The orange color is nice, I assume the moon was low in the sky considering the time and the phase.

Was this taken afocally through a telescope with a solar filter?

Otto,

You should have stopped the lens down a bit and hid from the mosquitos while the earth did the work for you... I was attacked by quite a few last night at the telescope (adding insult to injury, as I had clouds most of the night).

Shawn,

A Kendrick Dew Remover heater was wrapped around the perimiter of the lens to prevent condensation of moisture on the lens. The heater was powered by a 12V battery that I normally use to power the telescope in the field, but since I had access to electricity, I used the battery for the second camera (the one I shot these start trails with).

Kristina,

In New York the transit was in progress at sunrise. Sunrise was at about 5:28 AM, but it took about half an hour before I could see the sun due to a cloud layer. We less than 2 hours of transit time.
