Cute, indeed. Jake is far too mature and handsome to be subjected to the indignity of "cute".

But I gotta admit, he is a real doll, eh.

Great light, expression, etc.

Thanks. But here's the one that I almost posted, as an hommage to you. :>

Lovely. But the title seems off. The only "old fishermen" who own lake or sea-side villas like that tend to be old millionaires as well.

There is a rich buttery cookie, shaped like a sea shell, called a Madeleine. The novelist Marcel Proust wrote in his major opus Remembrance of Things Past (aka Swann's Way) about the memory of the smell of fresh Madeleines. In any event, the metal baking pan appeared to me to be a pan for baking Madeleines.

Thanks. Oscar is a friend, an economist who has immigrated with his family to Canada from a small poor country in South America that is constantly in turmoil. He came along on a visit to Buffalo last year. The Frida Kahlo self-portrait was at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, which is, by the way, a great place. (AND they allow photography, without flash.)

Thanks, Peter. I actually took the picture over a year ago. I'm pretty sure that I scanned from a print, but its possible that it was a scan done by Blacks, from 100 ASA store label Fuji clide film.

In any event, I don't think I sharpened it at all.

Sorry to find fault, but...

I don't like the way the flower is so centered. I just can't break out of the "rule of thirds", I guess.

There is something about the shape and color of the flower that seems unnatural - we're not looking at it head on, but there is not the expected shading or variation of color or, or - I'm not sure what - and so it looks out of kilter ... to me.

Finally, I think it would look better if there were less depth of field. Make the flower sharp and let the stems and leaves begin to blur.

I agree, nice tones. The light is great. But... Not to be critical, but... its too bad that we don't get to see more of his face, esp. his eyes. Hands being partly out of frame? Not a problem. That big concrete wall at the left? Not so bad either.

Thanks. The film is a store brand film, that I know to be made by Agfa. (The store lab also uses excellent Agfa machines.) I willask the manager whether he knows which film it is.

I don't remember which "old M42 body" (i.e., an older SLR that takes screw-mount lenses) I used, but really what is key is shooting with an older fast "prime" such as, in this case, a Mamiya Sekor f/1.4 55mm, with the aperture wide open at f/1.4. Focus on a close-up subject, but be mindful of the background that will be a blur.

Thanks. I don't own Photoshop. I have very simple software that has a "fix now" sort of feature, that adjusts the brightness and exposure slightly. If I like the change, I go with it, and if not I hit "undo". but what you see is 98.9% what's on the negative. No added colors or artificial ingredients.

Excellent.

Its scary what these digital SLRs and Nikon prime lenses are capable of - in the hands of someone with a good eye.

Thanks. But, y'know, there's nothing wrong with a "6". When I rate photos, sometimes I like to hold the "7"s in reserve for photos that really blow me away.

I know you're not into florals, but you should try a few flower photos wide open witha 50mm f/1.8.

Thanks, Paula. I didn't make any changes with photo editing software. If I had, I'd have removed that hair that seems to have been on the scanner glass. (:>)

Thanks.

A story? Not much of one. A colleague who has since gone on maternity leave, ate in qualtity all manner of exotic fruit at her desk. One day she had a papaya, cut just as in the photo, with the lovely color and the black seeds.

Sometimes I like to compose "still lifes" at the kitchen table, and shoot them in (mostly) available light. In this case the parenthetical "mostly" refers to the table lamp that I put on the table.

Your handling of the various sources of light - windowlight on the walls, incandescent light at the altar and then in the foreground - is great.

OK, I was being a curmudgeon. Speak in haste, repent at leisure, they say.

I do think there is a tendency to over-praise here. Heck, I like it myself, when I get a 7, so I shouldn't complain. But I think even cranky criticism can be helpful.

I think in my comment I was reflecting on how easy it can be to achieve all sorts of effects, with basic photo editing programs. There's nothing wrong with "easy", but sometimes I get cranky about such manipulation, and I wonder whether it would be better to concentrate on making better un-manipulated images first. Whatever. I guess I'm starting to blather.

Nice, but... the stuff in the background (towel, laundry on the floor peeking out behind her head) is unfortunate.
