Yeah, its worth getting up before the sun comes up to get in position. From the first ray of sun to the last in a days time, the character of the canyon continually changes. What focal length did you use here?

Macros can be a real challenge for depth of field. Then the little critter can go walking (crawling) around and spoil your focus and you have to start all over again.
