Anyway we are all novice and that is why I love the pictures here. Honestly your pictures are really great!

Many thanks Roland. This was my first visit to the Great Wall and it was a life dream for me - and lived up to every aspiration! Your comment about the depth of field is totally accepted. As a photographic novice I am not sure quite how to rectify that.

Wow another great shot and in color this time. I hope I could see more of your pictures in China! I can tell you that you were lucky to have this light at the Great Wall. Most of the time it is smoggy and not really favorable for the photographer. In this one the depth of field is just perfect in the window opening. I wish we could see more of the Great Wall, like a snake on the top of the mountains. But we can see up to 3 levels of mountains which is by itself a remarkable feature.
Congratulations again,
Roland

Hi Adele,
I really love this shot!! The centering is just perfect and the tones and contrast delivers a very wide of greys from foreground to background. You just have to let your eyes follow from black to grey. I only regret the too important depth of field which makes the archery window too clear and sharp and therefore distracts the viewer from the Great Wall in the center. I went several times to the Great Wall and to different places. That is may be why I am so enthusiastic about your picture. Hen hao!

The colours of the parasol is a good contrast to the stiff soldier - and makes the whole situation nearly funny!
Very well captured!
Kind regards

I absolutely love the S2 IS, which I used on my trip to Bamiyan, where I was able to get shots that no-one else in the party managed to capture. I recommended it to a friend of mine, who is a long-term 35mm SLR devotee and she has just come back from Alaska raving about it. Thank you so much for the rec - it is everything you said it would be!

Fantastic to hear from you!

Ciao, A xx

As a t*x payer - you should be spending less time driving around the streets of Kabul.... Great shot though!

I like the effect. Two approaches to it. One, the kid might be slightly looking at the billboard, in his present pose. Or he might have his arms raised, and jump in sympathy with the emotion of the model on the billboard. Of course, either would have to posed.

It might be possible to crop a little on the top, maybe even the bottom, without it becoming too much like letterbox.

Many thanks for your comments Dennis, and for the revised version which does draw focus to the centre of the picture.

However, to put it in context, this shot was taken on Jalalabad Road, outside Kabul. This is the most dangerous road in the region and is the scene of most of the suicide bombings in Kabul. A lone female walking in this area risks being shot, being kidnapped or being stoned. Getting out of the car wasn't an option. Even slowing the car down wasn't an option as it isn't a place that you linger.

Of the two versions you've posted I prefer this one. The picture has a couple of interesting elements Adele. The English mobile telephony ad looks bizzare in such a setting - "it's time to move ahead" - the man in the ad "moves" ahead but the Afghan boy looks back - you're right, this juxtaposition makes the picture. You've also got the shacks and the Arabic writing in there - you've got things but the picture does not "arrange" them as it should. You should've gotten out of the car and composed it trying a few different angles. You should also remember that the square format you've chosen requires good compositional skills. I toyed around with it a bit and came up with some suggestions. Don't know if "my version" is any improvement over yours - it just reflects my taste - hope you don't mind.
Regards, D.

Thank you very much. One of the most frustrating things of being here in Kabul is not being able to stop and take a photograph properly. This is a picture I would have loved to take with a better camera and not from a moving vehicle.

Adele - technically great pic with a terrible and important story to tell. I like the contrasts ... might have moved the "alcove" to the right in the composition and brought in a bit more of the lower bluffs to the left.

Thanks! Mark

The vivid green vegetation is the give away, but if not for that, the land formations resemble Capital Reef NP Utah. Very nicely detailed and shot to scale. The foreground that you've included really sets the perspective on this piece. The snow capped mountains in the background beautifully frame the eroded mountainsides. A very attractive shot that is well presented. -john
